Daphne Goring receives 2024 Gold Medal from Canadian Society of Plant Biologists

, a professor in the department of cell and systems biology in the Faculty of Arts & Science, has been awarded the .

Considered the highest honour in Canadian plant science, the medal is presented to individuals in recognition of their outstanding research and leadership contributions over the course of their careers.

Goring was recognized for her groundbreaking research on flowering plants that exposes the cellular mechanisms of pollen-pistil interactions. For decades, her studies have probed fundamental aspects of biology by revealing novel molecular processes that prevent plants from inbreeding.

The medal also recognizes Goring's contributions as a mentor and organizer in the plant sciences community. She has supervised 26 graduate students and over 60 undergraduates, served as chair of the department of cell and systems biology and taught foundational courses in cell and molecular biology as well as plant biotechnology. She has also served on the executive of the Canadian Society of Plant Biologists.
