Geoffrey Hinton wins 2019 Honda Prize

Geoffrey Hinton, Emeritus at the University of Toronto, has received the 2019 Honda Prize for his pioneering work in the field of deep learning in artificial intelligence – and for his contributions to bring this technology to the broader world.

The Honda Foundation’s Honda Prize is awarded to one interdisciplinary researcher each year who is addressing global challenges and contributing toward “the creation of a truly humane civilization.”

Hinton is the first TV researcher and the second member of a Canadian institution to receive the international prize, which comes with an honorarium of 10 million yen (about $123,000).
