would represent the University of Toronto Mississauga at <a href="https://cop29.az/en/home">COP29 in Azerbaijan</a>, it reaffirmed her belief that she made the right choice as an international student dedicated to climate action.&nbsp;</p> <p>A first-year student from Spain, Allue says she didn’t realize the scale of °”ÍűTV’s leadership in <a href="/news/tags/sustainability?page=0">sustainability</a> until she came to the university.</p> <p>“I knew everything here was very modern, and I noticed all the small but important ways that the campus promotes sustainability in areas like waste management and food services – but I didn’t know about the systems and infrastructure behind it,” says Allue, who is pursuing a double major in economics and political science with a minor in environmental law and policy.</p> <p>“Then I read <a href="https://www.utm.utoronto.ca/green/transforming-our-campus">UTM’s [Climate Positive Plan]</a> to achieve carbon-neutrality by 2043.”</p> <p>The plan, which includes a commitment – <a href="https://sustainability.utoronto.ca/operations/climate-positive-tri-campus-commitment/">adopted by all three campuses</a> – to become climate-positive by 2050, is one of several initiatives that Allue will spread the word about at the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference, beginning Nov. 11 and ending Nov. 22.</p> <p>She’s also going to showcase °”ÍűTV Mississauga’s local strategies to address climate change, in addition to its array of educational and research programs on environmental issues – efforts that have contributed to °”ÍűTV being named the most sustainable university in the world <a href="/news/u-t-named-most-sustainable-university-world">in the 2024 QS World University Rankings</a>.</p> <p>“What’s happening at UTM is truly inspiring, and it’s an honour to spread awareness about it in the global community,” says Allue, who also looks forward to sharing her learnings from the conference with the °”ÍűTV Mississauga community when she returns.</p> <p>For Allue, attending the pre-eminent global gathering on climate change is a culmination of her efforts to engage with and raise awareness about climate issues.</p> <p>When she was only 15 years old, she started a recycling and wastewater project in her hometown of Soria in northern Spain. “I wanted to educate my peers about what they could do, because climate action is often perceived as something that belongs to powerful stakeholders,” she says.</p> <p>Allue has also been involved with several international organizations that encourage youth to participate in politics and civil society, with a strong focus on environmental issues: she’s currently a European Union (EU) Young European Ambassador and a member of the European Youth Energy Network, which she will also represent at COP29.</p> <figure role="group" class="caption caption-drupal-media align-center"> <div> <div class="field short time at °”ÍűTV, Allue has gotten involved in several sustainability initiatives, including the UTM Sustainability Ambassador program and the Student Association for Geography, Geomatics and the Environment (SAGE).</p> <p>She says the support she has received from °”ÍűTV Mississauga’s Sustainability Office in attending COP29 is proof of the university’s steadfast belief in students’ potential to effect change.</p> <p>“What I'm really looking forward to is bringing to COP29 the sense of belonging and pride that I feel in UTM’s climate action,” says Allue.&nbsp;</p> <p>“When I first started contributing to the environmental field, I felt like my voice was barely heard. Now I feel so much optimism because I’ve found spaces like UTM that actively encourage young people to speak up and participate.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Mon, 11 Nov 2024 15:14:23 +0000 rahul.kalvapalle 310549 at Math grad says °”ÍűTV taught him to 'learn how to learn' /news/math-grad-says-u-t-taught-him-learn-how-learn <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Math grad says °”ÍűTV taught him to 'learn how to learn'</span> <div class="field field--name-field-featured-picture field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="eager" srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-11/06ce9d7e-2d34-4d9f-8012-b6375520124e-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=VRcnHd5a 370w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_740/public/2024-11/06ce9d7e-2d34-4d9f-8012-b6375520124e-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=JyLJpEAJ 740w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_1110/public/2024-11/06ce9d7e-2d34-4d9f-8012-b6375520124e-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=AfuLTc9U 1110w" sizes="(min-width:1200px) 1110px, (max-width: 1199px) 80vw, (max-width: 767px) 90vw, (max-width: 575px) 95vw" width="740" height="494" src="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-11/06ce9d7e-2d34-4d9f-8012-b6375520124e-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=VRcnHd5a" alt="&quot;&quot;"> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>rahul.kalvapalle</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2024-11-06T15:15:18-05:00" title="Wednesday, November 6, 2024 - 15:15" class="datetime">Wed, 11/06/2024 - 15:15</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Cutline</div> <div class="field__item"><p><em>Sean Fridkin, who earned a bachelor's in math and computer science, counts&nbsp;University Professor Emeritus and Nobel Prize-winner Geoffrey Hinton among his inspirations&nbsp;(supplied image)</em></p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-reporters field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/authors-reporters/rahul-kalvapalle" hreflang="en">Rahul Kalvapalle</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Topic</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/topics/our-community" hreflang="en">Our Community</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-story-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/convocation-2024" hreflang="en">Convocation 2024</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/computer-science" hreflang="en">Computer Science</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/faculty-arts-science" hreflang="en">Faculty of Arts &amp; Plus, the people are great ... it’s a great place to learn, grow and network.”</p> <p>Fridkin spoke to <em>°”ÍűTV News</em> about his interest in math and computer science, plans for the future and thoughts on how students can get the most out of their undergraduate years:</p> <hr> <p><strong>How did you become interested in mathematics and computer science?</strong></p> <p>I think math is about trying to understand the world. All around, you have things going on, things happening, and math is seeing the patterns and getting a deeper understanding for what’s going on. That’s always interested me. I think it interests most people – they just don’t know that it’s called math and there’s a language for it.</p> <p>The way I did my math major is I took a bunch of courses in different fields, but the main thing that unifies them is they teach you to think about the world in different ways. You have classes about the closeness of objects, analysis, topology, you’ve got to think about different types of infinities
You expand the way in which you think, and that interested me more than any specific path within mathematics.</p> <p>In terms of computer science, I really like numerical methods, where you try to approximate – given some data – and interpolate with models to predict real things. I find machine learning numerical methods really fun.</p> <p><strong>What was your approach to learning while at °”ÍűTV?</strong></p> <p>The number one goal for me in university was to learn how to learn – and learn how to think about new things and discover new ways of thinking. That’s the thing °”ÍűTV gave me. You get the opportunity to talk to lots of different people, lots of different perspectives and learn from professors who are very experienced in the field and often have a unique way of thinking about different problems.</p> <p>Also, with the assignments, you have to push yourself and that’s what I enjoyed about it. It was a little different from high school, where an assignment might take you 30 minutes. Here, for some of the math classes, I would have to initially spend maybe a couple of days on one assignment. And I learned a lot from that. I think it’s going to impact me, not only as I go further in my career, but also in life.</p> <p><strong>What are your plans for your career and education going forward?</strong></p> <p>I’m looking for computer science roles. I want to learn from interesting people and work on interesting problems.&nbsp; That’s the main goal. I don’t have any specific field that I’m going for within computer science – just interesting problems and people who I know I’ll be able to learn from and who I admire and respect.</p> <p>I really enjoy learning, but I think most learning can be done informally, on your own or with good people at a company. But certainly, if there’s something interesting that I want to learn more about and that I can’t do on my own, I would 100 per cent go back to school.</p> <p>Long term, I want to transition to something in the machine learning world.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>What would be your advice to students starting university?</strong></p> <p>I think the actual coursework is secondary to what you do in university. You should learn how to approach new problems ... For me, since I was going into math and computer science, I read a little bit of math stuff and I mostly worked on brain teaser problems. That helped me much more than any domain knowledge in any of the fields.</p> <p>As soon as you build that thought process in your head – as soon as that becomes your natural way of thinking – everything becomes so much easier.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Wed, 06 Nov 2024 20:15:18 +0000 rahul.kalvapalle 310248 at For this °”ÍűTV grad from Sri Lanka, giving up was never an option /news/u-t-grad-sri-lanka-giving-was-never-option <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">For this °”ÍűTV grad from Sri Lanka, giving up was never an option</span> <div class="field field--name-field-featured-picture field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="eager" srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-11/DSCF6051-CROP.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=0KldRwwz 370w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_740/public/2024-11/DSCF6051-CROP.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=nFVs5S-S 740w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_1110/public/2024-11/DSCF6051-CROP.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=GQO7vqRg 1110w" sizes="(min-width:1200px) 1110px, (max-width: 1199px) 80vw, (max-width: 767px) 90vw, (max-width: 575px) 95vw" width="740" height="494" src="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-11/DSCF6051-CROP.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=0KldRwwz" alt="&quot;&quot;"> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>rahul.kalvapalle</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2024-11-05T11:08:09-05:00" title="Tuesday, November 5, 2024 - 11:08" class="datetime">Tue, 11/05/2024 - 11:08</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Cutline</div> <div class="field__item"><p><em>Rashmi de Silva Wijeyeratne graduated with an honours bachelor of science in psychology from °”ÍűTV Scarborough after a tumultuous start to her post-secondary education (photo by Don Campbell)</em></p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-reporters field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/authors-reporters/alexa-battler" hreflang="en">Alexa Battler</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Topic</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/topics/our-community" hreflang="en">Our Community</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-story-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/convocation-2024" hreflang="en">Convocation 2024</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/camh" hreflang="en">CAMH</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/international-students" hreflang="en">International Students</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/u-t-scarborough" hreflang="en">°”ÍűTV Scarborough</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/undergraduate-students" hreflang="en">Undergraduate Students</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-subheadline field--type-string-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Subheadline</div> <div class="field__item">Rashmi de Silva Wijeyeratne spent three years pursuing an illegitimate degree in Sri Lanka, before starting over at °”ÍűTV Scarborough<br> </div> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p><strong>Rashmi de Silva Wijeyeratne</strong>&nbsp;was only two months away from completing an undergraduate program in Sri Lanka when she found out that the degree she’d spent years working towards wasn’t accredited.</p> <p>Wijeyeratne had studied at an institution affiliated with a British university and was told that she would earn a degree from that university – but when she visited the U.K. and toured the campus, she found out that wasn’t the case.</p> <p>A devastated Wijeyeratne dropped out of the program, but soon turned her energy towards starting over with her undergraduate studies, applying to the University of Toronto Scarborough’s Arts &amp; Science Co-op program.</p> <p>On Oct. 29, eight years after she first set out in pursuit of post-secondary education in Sri Lanka, Wijeyeratne crossed the stage at Convocation Hall, graduating with an honours bachelor of science in psychology.</p> <p>“A lot of people ask me, ‘How did you restart?’ I think so many of us are capable of so much more in terms of resilience,” said Wijeyeratne, now 27. “When we are faced with a situation, you don't just give up, you want to fight, you want to try again.</p> <p>“It was hard, but I didn't see giving up as an option.”</p> <p>It’s an ethos that Wijeyeratne espoused throughout her time at °”ÍűTV. Although the setback in Sri Lanka was behind here when she arrived in Canada, there were more challenges lying in wait.</p> <p>Starting her °”ÍűTV studies during the COVID-19 pandemic, Wijeyeratne had to do the first month of her studies remotely from Sri Lanka. When she finally got to Canada, she spent two weeks in quarantine in a Toronto hotel, and then, right when she was allowed to leave, her grandfather died.</p> <p>Wijeyeratne had to miss the funeral, as there was no way for her to make it to Sri Lanka on time, and she would have had to quarantine again upon her return to Canada. She couldn’t see her family for two years due to ever-changing travel restrictions and the fear of being trapped outside of Canada.</p> <p>Despite being alone in Canada, Wijeyeratne threw herself into academics as well as extra-curricular opportunities, albeit on her computer screen. Once vaccines became available and restrictions eased, she got to work reviving multiple campus groups, including as vice-president and, eventually, president of the <a href="https://utscgleeclub.weebly.com/">UTSC Glee Club</a>. She was also finally able to welcome her parents to Canada.</p> <p>A self-described arts kid – she hails from a family of prominent performers in Sri Lanka’s musical theatre scene - Wijeyeratne nevertheless developed a love of biology, clinical medicine and health care at °”ÍűTV.</p> <figure role="group" class="caption caption-drupal-media align-center"> <div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/scale_image_750_width_/public/2024-11/24172756_1697889886929667_7957807224430537600_o.jpg?itok=7CXiysFn" width="750" height="500" alt="Rashmi de Silva Wijeyeratne playing the guitar and singing in public" class="image-style-scale-image-750-width-"> </div> </div> <figcaption><em>An avid musician, Wijeyeratne hails from a family of musical theatre performers in Sri Lanka (supplied image)</em></figcaption> </figure> <p>She volunteered in several labs and completed a co-op placement at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in the lab of <a href="https://www.camh.ca/en/science-and-research/science-and-research-staff-directory/jeffreymeyer">senior scientist <strong>Jeffrey Meyer</strong></a>, a professor in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine’s department of psychiatry. The lab combines several of Wijeyeratne’s interests: it’s dedicated to investigating the psychological impact that music has on babies and children.</p> <p>With Cirelli’s encouragement, Wijeyeratne presented her thesis – an investigation into how grandparents connect with their grandchildren over Zoom – at the <a href="https://static1.squarespace.com/static/65fa2ea634036b6933902afe/t/672927313c10c33c5fc05a39/1730750267192/SMPC24_ProgramDraft_v5.pdf">Society for Music Perception and Cognition conference</a> in Banff, Alta. in July.</p> <p>“One of the most rewarding parts of being a professor at °”ÍűTV Scarborough is working with and getting to know passionate students like Rashmi,” Cirelli says. “It was especially inspiring to see Rashmi shine at the conference this summer. She presented with clarity and pride.”</p> <p>For her part, Wijeyeratne says being a member of the TEMPO Lab and getting mentored by Cirelli was “life-changing.”</p> <p>Outside the research realm, Wijeyeratne also found time to pick up hands-on skills, working her way up °”ÍűTV Scarborough’s Emergency Medical Response Group to become a trained emergency first responder.&nbsp;</p> <p>She's now looking forward to her next chapter: working as a research analyst in CAMH’s emergency department starting in November.</p> <p>“It's been such a non-traditional trajectory towards getting here,” Wijeyeratne says. “But my proudest achievement is&nbsp;being able to make my family proud. She added that what matters is why we self-censor – do we do it out of fear or out of consideration for others?</p> <p>Williams, a professor of English and author who has published acclaimed books of poetry, essays and works of fiction, warned against viewing debate as simply an opportunity to persuade someone else of your views.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>“The more interesting way of having these conversations [is not to] focus on converting a person to a team, but saying, ‘Here’s how my ideas have changed over time.’”</p> <p>There were several other takeaways for the largely student audience, which included several first-years.&nbsp;</p> <p>Paraphrasing French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, Boyagoda, a writer, professor of English and vice-dean, undergraduate in the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science, urged students to “think against yourself ” by creating their own counterarguments as an intellectual exercise. Similarly, Paul spoke about the value of engaging with those who don’t share your opinions.</p> <p>Stein and Williams also emphasized the °”ÍűTV community’s shared responsibility to create an environment where people can ask questions and test out ideas. And if you find yourself amongst people who refuse to grant that space? “Just take that conversation elsewhere, rather than burying it or self-censoring it,” Williams said.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>Following the talk, students asked questions about the “paradox of tolerance,” or the idea that creating a tolerant society requires being intolerant of intolerance, and how to cope with the repercussions of being ostracized for expressing an unpopular view, among other things.</p> <p>Considine, one of four undergraduate student members of the civil discourse working group, said he was pleased to see so many students engaging with the topic.&nbsp;</p> <p>“That’s something that, as one of the student representatives – and as the youngest student representative – I'm very conscious about.”&nbsp;</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Tue, 24 Sep 2024 17:38:08 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 309572 at 'A transformative experience': °”ÍűTV program gives first-year student - and aspiring surgeon - a head start /news/transformative-experience-u-t-program-gives-first-year-student-and-aspiring-surgeon-head-start <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">'A transformative experience': °”ÍűTV program gives first-year student - and aspiring surgeon - a head start</span> <div class="field field--name-field-featured-picture field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="eager" srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-09/0909NastehaOmar007.jpg?h=20014d77&amp;itok=NaJoPDy7 370w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_740/public/2024-09/0909NastehaOmar007.jpg?h=20014d77&amp;itok=FBNFC2-s 740w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_1110/public/2024-09/0909NastehaOmar007.jpg?h=20014d77&amp;itok=FUsy_V8l 1110w" sizes="(min-width:1200px) 1110px, (max-width: 1199px) 80vw, (max-width: 767px) 90vw, (max-width: 575px) 95vw" width="740" height="494" src="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-09/0909NastehaOmar007.jpg?h=20014d77&amp;itok=NaJoPDy7" alt="&quot;&quot;"> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>rahul.kalvapalle</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2024-09-12T13:14:30-04:00" title="Thursday, September 12, 2024 - 13:14" class="datetime">Thu, 09/12/2024 - 13:14</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Cutline</div> <div class="field__item"><p><em>Nasteha Omar is pursuing an honours bachelor of science in life sciences, and eyeing a specialist in molecular biology (photo by Nick Iwanyshyn)</em></p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-reporters field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/authors-reporters/rahul-kalvapalle" hreflang="en">Rahul Kalvapalle</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Topic</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/topics/our-community" hreflang="en">Our Community</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-story-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/back-school-2024" hreflang="en">Back to School 2024</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/current-students" hreflang="en">Current Students</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/first-year-students" hreflang="en">First Year Students</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/u-t-mississauga" hreflang="en">°”ÍűTV Mississauga</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/undergraduate-students" hreflang="en">Undergraduate Students</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-subheadline field--type-string-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Subheadline</div> <div class="field__item">Nasteha Omar, who wants to study orthopedics, spent a high school semester at °”ÍűTV Mississauga via the Support, Engage, Experience (SEE) UTM program</div> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p><strong>Nasteha Omar</strong> has long been interested in becoming an orthopedic surgeon – and thanks to a unique program at the University of Toronto Mississauga, the first-year student is already well on her way.&nbsp;</p> <p>“I’ve had to go to hospital and be in contact with different orthopedic surgeons lots of times because of problems that I have myself,” she says. “And I found their careers really interesting from a young age. It’s just something that I’ve always wanted to do.”</p> <p>While taking the first steps towards her goal at °”ÍűTV Mississauga was always her intention – her family lives near the campus and her older sister is already a student – Omar got an early and up-close look at university life via the <a href="https://www.utm.utoronto.ca/future-students/seeutm">Support, Engage, Experience °”ÍűTV Mississauga (SEE UTM)</a> initiative,&nbsp;which invites Peel District high school students to spend a semester at °”ÍűTV Mississauga to get a taste of post-secondary education.</p> <p>It was nothing short of “a transformative experience,” says Omar, who was encouraged to apply for the initiative by her vice-principal at Erindale Secondary School.&nbsp;“It wasn’t only a chance to connect with peers and mentors, but also an opportunity to engage in programs that helped me enrich my academic and personal growth.”&nbsp;</p> <p>Now a first-year student, Omar is pursuing an honours bachelor of science degree in life sciences and eyeing a specialist in molecular biology.</p> <p>She says her SEE UTM experience allowed her to explore the sciences from a variety of lenses. One of the highlights was taking a course, "STEM in Society," that explores how the STEM fields intersect with society, culture and politics.</p> <p>“I’ve always been interested in the sciences and STEM, so participating in a course that was more about the ethical side of ongoing situations in our world – and of science topics – really opened my eyes to different pathways that I want to explore,” Omar says of the course taught by <strong>Sheliza Ibrahim</strong>, an assistant professor, teaching stream, in the Institute for the Study of University Pedagogy.</p> <p>In addition to exploring new intellectual ground, Omar also got a taste of hands-on scientific research in the <a href="https://applylab.org/index.html">Applied Perception &amp; Psychophysics Laboratory</a>, co-directed by Assistant Professors <strong>Anna Kosovicheva</strong> and <strong>Benjamin Wolfe</strong> of the department of psychology. There, Omar used MATLAB programming software to design an experiment to study how visual and auditory stimuli interact. “It was to show how our perception of time can be influenced by how we interpret events,” she says.&nbsp;</p> <p>While Omar didn’t have time to test the experiment before her semester ended, she plans to do more lab work as an undergraduate student, picking up where she left off.</p> <p>Alongside her SEE UTM experience, Omar also gained insight into °”ÍűTV Mississauga's myriad resources and supports via the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.utm.utoronto.ca/future-students/black-access-educational-excellence">Black Access to Educational Excellence initiative (BAEE@UTM)</a>, which organizes events and networking opportunities aimed at helping Black high school students learn more about the campus community&nbsp;– a<span style="font-size: 1rem;">nd thrive once they get there.</span></p> <p>For Omar, that means looking beyond her academic goals. She&nbsp;plans to get involved in student clubs, particularly anything that caters to her love of literature – she writes poems and fiction, and took part in the <a href="https://www.utm.utoronto.ca/rgasc/undergraduate-students/caribbean-black-writing-collective">Caribbean &amp; Black Writing Collective</a> during her semester at the university. And she wants to start a non-profit tutoring organization by building on her high school experience founding the Erindale Secondary School chapter of <a href="https://www.learntobe.org/">Learn To Be</a>, an NGO that provides free online tutoring.&nbsp;</p> <p>“It was a great opportunity for students to not only gain volunteer hours but make connections with other students in an online tutoring format, where they tutored students from under-privileged families that wouldn’t be able to get extra help or access to educational resources outside of school,” she says.&nbsp;“I’d love to see it up and running at UTM if that would be a possibility.”</p> <p>Omar remains in touch with some of her peers from the SEE UTM and BAEE@UTM programs,&nbsp;as well as the upper-year °”ÍűTV Mississauga students who served as mentors.</p> <p>“I feel like we were all able to grow really close as a community,” she says. “It helped me find my footing for what was to come when I enter university, so it was really amazing.”</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Thu, 12 Sep 2024 17:14:30 +0000 rahul.kalvapalle 309348 at ‘A space for everyone’: °”ÍűTV Mississauga prepares to host second annual All-Nations Powwow /news/space-everyone-u-t-mississauga-prepares-host-second-annual-all-nations-powwow <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">‘A space for everyone’: °”ÍűTV Mississauga prepares to host second annual All-Nations Powwow</span> <div class="field field--name-field-featured-picture field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="eager" srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-09/UofT92414_0326UTMPowwow039-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=rZ2lhSmL 370w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_740/public/2024-09/UofT92414_0326UTMPowwow039-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=IG5Z9lax 740w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_1110/public/2024-09/UofT92414_0326UTMPowwow039-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=DLqwktpQ 1110w" sizes="(min-width:1200px) 1110px, (max-width: 1199px) 80vw, (max-width: 767px) 90vw, (max-width: 575px) 95vw" width="740" height="494" src="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-09/UofT92414_0326UTMPowwow039-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=rZ2lhSmL" alt="&quot;&quot;"> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>Christopher.Sorensen</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2024-09-10T11:21:04-04:00" title="Tuesday, September 10, 2024 - 11:21" class="datetime">Tue, 09/10/2024 - 11:21</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Cutline</div> <div class="field__item"><p><em>Dancers perform during the inaugural All-Nations Powwow at °”ÍűTV Mississauga in 2023 (photo by Nick Iwanyshyn)</em></p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-reporters field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/authors-reporters/kate-martin" hreflang="en">Kate Martin</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Topic</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/topics/our-community" hreflang="en">Our Community</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-story-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/all-nations-powwow" hreflang="en">All-Nations Powwow</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/indigenous" hreflang="en">Indigenous</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/u-t-mississauga" hreflang="en">°”ÍűTV Mississauga</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/undergraduate-students" hreflang="en">Undergraduate Students</a></div> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>When you invite everyone, you need to make sure you have plenty of space.&nbsp;</p> <p>With that in mind, the University of Toronto Mississauga’s&nbsp;All-Nations Powwow&nbsp;will be moving outdoors this year.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>“A Powwow is a space for everyone,” says event&nbsp;co-lead dancer&nbsp;<strong>John Hupfield</strong>, who is Anishinaabe from Wasauksing First Nation.&nbsp;“A Powwow is not a show. Singleton says the centre, and&nbsp;Office of Indigenous Initiatives&nbsp;Director&nbsp;<strong>Tee Duke</strong>&nbsp;and Special Projects Officer&nbsp;<strong>Jessica Tabak</strong>, have been vital in helping them adjust to life at university.&nbsp;</p> <p>“I didn’t grow up in a city –&nbsp;I was in a small northwestern town, four hours west of Thunder Bay, so coming from there and transitioning to Mississauga was a big challenge,” says Singleton, 21.&nbsp;</p> <p>“Through the Indigenous Centre, I was able to meet people who were having a similar experience moving from up north to the hustle and bustle of southern Ontario. They gave us community.”&nbsp;</p> <p>Singleton, who&nbsp;<a href="/news/anishinaabe-student-shares-inspiration-behind-u-t-s-2023-orange-shirt-day-design">designed the Every Child Matters charity shirt</a>&nbsp;sold in campus bookstores, says hosting an event like a Powwow at °”ÍűTV Mississauga goes a long way to help Indigenous students overcome their feelings of isolation, and that the gathering and amplifying of Indigenous voices on campus is an important part of °”ÍűTV’s ongoing reconciliation process.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>“To be able to see everyone in person and celebrate with other people is really important,” says Singleton, who plans to take their °”ÍűTV Mississauga education home to Migisi Sahgaigan First Nation (Eagle Lake) to help improve legal representation for Indigenous people in northern communities.</p> <p>“Having access is especially important for those who have never been to a Powwow.”&nbsp;</p> <p>Singleton says the benefits are magnified in places like °”ÍűTV Mississauga, which draws students from around the world.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>“UTM has such an amazing and diverse population of international students and local students who have never seen a Powwow, so this is a chance to learn about our culture,” Singleton says, noting they discovered a new relative through interaction at last year’s event.</p> <p>“One of my best friends is from Peru and she thought last year’s Powwow, her first, was the most amazing thing. We had so much fun and I was so proud.”&nbsp;</p> <p>Singleton says they hope many first-timers will turn out for the event and share in the spirit of community.&nbsp; In addition to a full afternoon of traditional ceremonies, singing and dancing, there will also be a marketplace featuring Indigenous-owned businesses.&nbsp;</p> <p>“Come with an open mind, come with an open heart,” Singleton says. “Get to know the people in regalia, make those connections, form friendships and celebrate us as a people. It’s wonderful to be able to invite people of all kinds to dance during&nbsp;intertribal. It’s just so much fun for everyone.”&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Tue, 10 Sep 2024 15:21:04 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 309346 at 'Helping the people I grew up with': °”ÍűTV undergrad returns home with a passion for sustainability /news/helping-people-i-grew-u-t-undergrad-returns-home-passion-sustainability <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">'Helping the people I grew up with': °”ÍűTV undergrad returns home with a passion for sustainability</span> <div class="field field--name-field-featured-picture field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="eager" srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-09/Connor_August2024-crop.jpg?h=c9644922&amp;itok=XZaN4PDD 370w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_740/public/2024-09/Connor_August2024-crop.jpg?h=c9644922&amp;itok=ry-Y59kV 740w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_1110/public/2024-09/Connor_August2024-crop.jpg?h=c9644922&amp;itok=-dokDm_i 1110w" sizes="(min-width:1200px) 1110px, (max-width: 1199px) 80vw, (max-width: 767px) 90vw, (max-width: 575px) 95vw" width="740" height="494" src="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-09/Connor_August2024-crop.jpg?h=c9644922&amp;itok=XZaN4PDD" alt="&quot;&quot;"> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>Christopher.Sorensen</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2024-09-05T11:56:08-04:00" title="Thursday, September 5, 2024 - 11:56" class="datetime">Thu, 09/05/2024 - 11:56</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Cutline</div> <div class="field__item"><p><em>Connor Isaac, a third-year mechanical engineering student, says he hopes to bring awareness of new, sustainable technologies to the community where he grew up&nbsp;(photo by Tristan McGuirk)</em></p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-reporters field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/authors-reporters/tristan-mcguirk" hreflang="en">Tristan McGuirk</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Topic</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/topics/our-community" hreflang="en">Our Community</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-story-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/faculty-applied-science-engineering" hreflang="en">Faculty of Applied Science &amp; Engineering</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/mechanical-industrial-engineering" hreflang="en">Mechanical &amp; Industrial Engineering</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/sustainability" hreflang="en">Sustainability</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/undergraduate-students" hreflang="en">Undergraduate Students</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-subheadline field--type-string-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Subheadline</div> <div class="field__item">Connor Isaac is embarking on a year-long work experience term with Walpole Island First Nation, where he will be focused on the community's renewable energy future</div> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>Growing up on Walpole Island First Nation,&nbsp;<strong>Connor Isaac</strong>&nbsp;experienced a creative impulse from an early age – a trait that ultimately led him to the University of Toronto where he's exploring sustainability solutions.&nbsp;</p> <p>“I would take apart electronics, I would play with Legos, play puzzle games, different things like that – it kind of fostered this creative mindset,” he says of his childhood.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>“My teacher recommended that I look into engineering, and I thought, ‘You know what? That’s not a bad idea.’”&nbsp;</p> <p>Now a third-year mechanical engineering student in °”ÍűTV’s Faculty of Applied Science &amp; Engineering, Isaac says he is preparing to give back to the community where he got his start.&nbsp;</p> <p>He is embarking on a 12-month role working alongside Chief and Council on Walpole Island First Nation as part of the <a href="https://discover.engineering.utoronto.ca/experiential-learning/professional-experience-year-pey/">Professional Experience Year Co-op Program </a>(PEY Co-op). As °”ÍűTV Engineering’s flagship work-experience program, the co-op allows students to graduate with up to 20 months of meaningful work experience while earning a competitive salary and gaining professional skills in industry.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>“I started working with Chief and Council last summer, sitting in their meetings and just kind of assessing projects on the island. I told them that I would be completing a PEY Co-op work term, and they said it would be great if I could come back,” Isaac says.&nbsp;</p> <p>“This time my work is going to be more focused on Walpole Island First Nation’s renewable energy future. Since it’s a whole year, I’m hoping that it gives me a good idea of what it’s like working in industry.”&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>Isaac, who is&nbsp;Chippewa (Ojibwe) and Potawatom, and was raised between Walpole Island First Nation and the nearby town of Wallaceburg, Ont., says one of his biggest motivators for returning to Walpole Island is the chance to bring awareness of new, sustainable technologies to the community.&nbsp;</p> <p>“I’m looking forward to helping the people living on Walpole Island First Nation understand what technology we’re using, because there’s a big disconnect,” he says. “I want to help inform the community about the various things that the Council is doing that will help them.” &nbsp;</p> <p>Isaac’s commitment to sustainability goes beyond his PEY Co-op. He’s also involved in undergraduate research with&nbsp;<strong>David Sinton</strong>, a professor of mechanical and industrial engineering, and his team.&nbsp;</p> <p>“I have been working with Professor Sinton on CO2 to ethanol research, which is a carbon capture clean technology where we capture CO2 from the air to be run through an electrolyzer. This will allow us to generate ethanol and other useful carbon-based products,” Isaac says.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>He is also working alongside <strong>Tracy Galloway</strong>, an associate professor of anthropology at °”ÍűTV Mississauga, as a research assistant on the&nbsp;<a href="/news/u-t-led-collaboration-develop-community-tailored-clean-energy-technologies">CANSTOREnergy&nbsp;project</a>, a °”ÍűTV-led collaboration that includes researchers from 11 Canadian universities. The team is developing clean energy technologies tailored to the needs of communities in the Yukon.&nbsp;</p> <p>“Professor Sinton told me about the CANSTOREnergy project, and I mentioned that I have worked with my reserve during the summer, communicating similar ideas to the Chief and Council, but not so much to the community,” he says.&nbsp;</p> <p>In the past, researchers have come into Indigenous communities to conduct studies without consulting the people affected, adds Isaac.</p> <p>“We’re trying to avoid that.”</p> <p>Upon graduation, Isaac hopes to pursue graduate studies.</p> <p>“I am heavily considering a master’s degree, but I’m not too sure in which area. I don’t want to plan too far ahead because sometimes life gets in the way,” he says.&nbsp;</p> <p>“My focus right now is helping the people that I grew up with and giving back to the community that raised me.”&nbsp;</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div The effort also helped secure funding for culinary education.</p> <p>“It ended up being one of the most transformative experiences of my life, connecting me deeply with both the student body and the educational community," Marcel says.</p> <p>Marcel, who will begin a bachelor of commerce degree at the University of Toronto this fall,&nbsp;decided to act when a survey revealed a significant demand for healthier, more affordable meal options.</p> <p>“Students expressed concerns about the high cost and low quality of their food, which I found unacceptable,” she says. “I recognized the need for change and saw an opportunity to advocate for healthier food in schools while better supporting our students.”&nbsp;</p> <p>As she attended Greater Fort Erie Secondary School in Fort Erie, Ont., Marcel educated herself on food services policy and finance and carried out research on the impact of nutrition on academic performance and student success.&nbsp;</p> <p>With her adviser’s encouragement, Marcel shared her findings in a letter to the president of DSBN’s food service provider. A series of meetings followed and, ultimately, a revamp of cafeteria menus.</p> <p>Next, Marcel turned her attention to campaigning for more resources for culinary education. This led to the DSBN allocating $500,000 in its 2023-24 budget to expand culinary education.</p> <p>Marcel's contributions were recognized with an <a href="https://www.opsba.org/2024-ontario-public-student-trustee-leadership-scholarship/">Ontario Public Student Trustee Leadership Scholarship</a>, jointly awarded by the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association and the Public Board Council of OSTA-AECO. The&nbsp;award citation noted that her work benefited some 37,500 students.</p> <p>She's&nbsp;keen to highlight that the positive outcomes were the result of collective effort.</p> <p>“I wouldn’t say that these changes are my accomplishments. In high school, she served as secretary of the student leadership council, led the grad committee and was captain of the soccer team. She is also an active member of her church’s youth group.</p> <p>Growing up, Mushoriwa says she dreamed of attending °”ÍűTV. She says the scholarship – which covers tuition, incidental fees and residence costs for up to four years of study – feels like a shared reward for all the hard work and sacrifices they’ve made together.</p> <p>“I thought, well, isn’t that just perfect?” Mushoriwa says. “The school I wanted to go to since I was young, the exact degree [I was interested in] – I couldn’t ask for it any other way.”</p> <p>As eager as she is to start her journey at °”ÍűTV Mississauga, Mushoriwa admits she has mixed feelings about moving away from her father and the tight-knit Swift Current community that has supported her every step of the way.</p> <p>“My father and I are basically inseparable, so it might be tough to be so far away,” she says. “What I’m excited about is the growth I’ll experience personally.</p> <p>“Maybe I’ll learn something new about myself.”</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Mon, 19 Aug 2024 18:56:02 +0000 bresgead 309023 at
