Their creativity, intellectual prowess and dedication are vital to the university’s mission of generating solutions to the most pressing challenges of our time,” said <strong>Trevor Young</strong>, °”ÍűTV’s vice-president and provost.&nbsp;</p> <p>“At the same time, financial pressures can have a detrimental impact on students’ well-being and ability to advance their research. By increasing our financial support, we hope to alleviate some of that pressure and improve the graduate student experience, ensuring that our programs can continue to recruit and retain the next generation of exceptional scholars.”&nbsp;</p> <p>An estimated 2,800 domestic and international PhD students – more than half of the funded cohort – will see their funding increase under the new measure.&nbsp;</p> <p>The new funding commitment comes as governments around the world increasingly recognize research as an engine of economic innovation. In its 2024 budget, Canada’s federal government <a href="/news/u-t-welcomes-federal-budget-s-investments-research-and-innovation">made a significant reinvestment in the country’s research and talent</a>. This included $1.8 billion over five years to the federal granting councils and $825 million to federally funded graduate scholarships, raising the value of doctoral scholarships to $40,000.&nbsp;</p> <p>The federally supported scholarships, however, are competitive – most students do not receive them. The new funding commitment from °”ÍűTV raises the minimum level that all PhD and SJD students receive. &nbsp;</p> <p>“I have always loved °”ÍűTV, and it has allowed me to excel to places that I could only dream of. However, many times I deeply struggled to balance my academic aspirations with the intense demands of living and studying,” said<strong> Tina Keshavarzian</strong>, a PhD candidate in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine's department of medical biophysics whose research focuses on using single-cell sequencing, data science and machine learning to understand how cancers become more aggressive. The increased funding, she said, “can provide the stability students need to engage in their research and research community, leading to better academic outcomes and shorter times to completion. &nbsp;</p> <p>“When students feel supported and fulfilled, it creates a positive ripple effect in their academic teams and the entire university ecosystem.”&nbsp;</p> <p>The updated base funding package will be primarily supported by funds from divisional sources – such as&nbsp;research grants, fellowships and other funding streams administered by individual faculties and graduate units – with additional support from the university’s central budget to soften the financial impacts on some academic divisions.&nbsp;</p> <p>“I want to acknowledge, the tremendous leadership from deans across the university” said <strong>Joshua Barker</strong>, vice-provost, graduate research and education &amp; dean of the School of Graduate Studies. “Increasing graduate funding for our PhD and SJD students is truly a collaborative effort, one that requires commitment from all our partners – graduate units, faculty members, the university advancement teams and the university’s senior leadership. Together, we can meet this challenge and provide the support our graduate students deserve.”<br> &nbsp;<br> °”ÍűTV has also launched a PhD scholarship matching program that seeks to create 250 new PhD awards as part of <a href="https://defygravitycampaign.utoronto.ca/">the Defy Gravity fundraising campaign</a>. A donor’s $100,000 gift, combined with °”ÍűTV matching funds, will create a $250,000 endowed award, which will generate an annual income of approximately $10,000. This will combine with other sources of funding to increase the pool of funds available for PhD students.&nbsp;</p> <p>“PhDs are our most research-intensive degrees and the students who pursue them spend a lot of time at the university,” Barker said. “Their work has helped make °”ÍűTV the highest ranked university in Canada and one of the world’s top research institutions – and a large number of our PhDs go on to work across Canada in both academia and the private sector, strengthening the country’s economy and innovation landscape.</p> <p>“Investing in our PhDs means investing in Canada’s future.”&nbsp;</p> <p>Barker noted the new funding initiative comes on the heels of extensive research and consultations. He pointed to °”ÍűTV’s annual <a href="https://www.sgs.utoronto.ca/about/explore-our-data/gradseru/">Graduate Student Experience in the Research University (gradSERU) surveys</a>, in which a substantial number of respondents cited financial pressure as an obstacle to their academic progress.</p> <p>In fall 2022, °”ÍűTV convened a Graduate Funding Working Group – chaired by Barker and comprising faculty members, divisional leaders and students – to examine the graduate funding landscape and make recommendations. The working group <a href="https://www.sgs.utoronto.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Context-and-Recommendations-Final-Accessible-GFWG-20240115-1.pdf">issued its report the following year, outlining its considerations and recommendations</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>“We've heard the feedback, and the institution is now stepping up to do what's necessary to invest in our PhD students' well-being and success,” Barker said.&nbsp;</p> <p>Keshavarzian, a member of the tri-campus working group who previously directed Temerty Medicine's <a href="https://uoftfomgrc.ca/">graduate representation committee</a>, said the working group was key to understanding and addressing the concerns of graduate students across °”ÍűTV's three campuses.&nbsp;</p> <p>“This structure has allowed us to bring together diverse perspectives and create solutions at a university-wide level, rather than fragmenting the responsibility among various departments,” said Keshavarzian, who earned her honours bachelor of science degree at °”ÍűTV before returning for graduate studies. “I’m incredibly proud to be part of an institution willing to take on such hard work, aligning resources and leadership to address challenges systematically.&nbsp;</p> <p>“This collaborative approach has helped ensure that our university remains responsive to the needs of graduate students and committed to creating an environment where they can thrive both academically and personally.”&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <h3><a href="https://www.sgs.utoronto.ca/about/innovation-in-graduate-education/graduate-funding-at-u-of-t/">Read more at the School of Graduate Studies</a></h3> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Tue, 12 Nov 2024 13:00:55 +0000 rahul.kalvapalle 310523 at How did she do it? Following fall convocation, she hopes to pursue a career that combines her passions for graphic design and languages.</p> <p>“I wish to work in a capacity where I can converse and capitalize on all these skills I have amassed over the years,” says Lim, who also earned her bachelor’s degree from °”ÍűTV and is considered a hyperpolyglot – the term generally used to describe someone who can speak more than five languages.&nbsp;</p> <p>“I’d love to continue making meaningful connections with people and touching the hearts of others by learning their culture and language.”&nbsp;</p> <p>In the near term, Lim is eager to find opportunities in entertainment – perhaps with Disney on Ice or Royal Caribbean Cruises – to showcase her figure skating skills. She competed with the Malaysian junior national figure skating team and was a member of °”ÍűTV’s Varsity training squad.</p> <p>As she prepares to embark on a new chapter, Lim spoke with&nbsp;°”ÍűTV News&nbsp;about how she learned so many languages, her university experience and, of course, what language she plans to tackle next.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <hr> <p><strong>How did you learn all these languages?</strong></p> <p>I will give a lot of credit to my home country of Malaysia. Growing up with five languages in my household built my brain to absorb different languages.&nbsp;</p> <p>My brain works in different channels and compartments. With a photographic memory, learning languages is like translating these photographs in my head into these mental compartments.&nbsp;</p> <p>Due to my perfectionism in linguistics and eagerness to not make mistakes, I’ve developed resources, tools and mechanism to prevent cross-linguistic contamination. For languages that are in similar linguistic families – like Portuguese, French, Italian and Spanish – I created mechanisms for active recall to help me avoid mixing them up while speaking.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>How has studying at °”ÍűTV shaped your path?&nbsp;</strong></p> <p>I came to °”ÍűTV wanting to become a cardiac surgeon and now I have 11 languages under my belt. After my third semester of doing life sciences, I quickly found my love for linguistics and political activism.&nbsp;</p> <p>I had to take political science and social science – and if I had never taken these courses, I wouldn’t have known I was so passionate about diaspora studies, transnational studies, anthropology or sociology.</p> <p>That’s one thing about °”ÍűTV that I really appreciate. Some may complain about its academic rigour, but I think it worked out in my favour. The well-rounded education I received here is hard to find in other institutions in Canada.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>Being at °”ÍűTV has enriched and amplified my experience in language and my love for different cultures. I took Italian in my second year and Turkish in my third year. In my final year, I had some wiggle room for more electives. So, I decided to take Portuguese for Spanish speakers, which was so super, super helpful. Then I took French and Swahili.&nbsp;</p> <p>I believe the selection of different languages at °”ÍűTV offers a great plethora of knowledge and I want to keep that going.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>If you could instantly become fluent in one language, which one would it be?&nbsp;</strong></p> <p>Arabic is incredibly difficult to learn. I would really like to master this language – hopefully soon.&nbsp;</p> <p>I also want to learn Greek, Albanian and Armenian, seeing as there is a huge population of these three ethnic groups in Toronto and I want to be able to connect with those cultures.&nbsp;</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Wed, 30 Oct 2024 20:31:59 +0000 mattimar 310097 at °”ÍűTV researcher tracks 1,000 years of sea ice /news/u-t-researcher-tracks-1000-years-sea-ice-change <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">°”ÍűTV researcher tracks 1,000 years of sea ice</span> <div class="field field--name-field-featured-picture field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="eager" srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-10/Minoli-Dias-by-Natasha-LeClerc-CROP.jpg?h=520a578a&amp;itok=CuhxuOba 370w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_740/public/2024-10/Minoli-Dias-by-Natasha-LeClerc-CROP.jpg?h=520a578a&amp;itok=9Xmvs1cq 740w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_1110/public/2024-10/Minoli-Dias-by-Natasha-LeClerc-CROP.jpg?h=520a578a&amp;itok=5XtzzZCm 1110w" sizes="(min-width:1200px) 1110px, (max-width: 1199px) 80vw, (max-width: 767px) 90vw, (max-width: 575px) 95vw" width="740" height="494" src="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-10/Minoli-Dias-by-Natasha-LeClerc-CROP.jpg?h=520a578a&amp;itok=CuhxuOba" alt="&quot;&quot;"> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>Christopher.Sorensen</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2024-10-15T13:18:44-04:00" title="Tuesday, October 15, 2024 - 13:18" class="datetime">Tue, 10/15/2024 - 13:18</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Cutline</div> <div class="field__item"><p><em>Minoli Dias, a PhD student at °”ÍűTV Mississauga, examines coralline algae, which live for approximately 1,500 years and grow in annual layers, to construct a record of changes in sea ice cover over time (photo by Natasha Leclerc)</em></p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-reporters field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/authors-reporters/kristy-strauss" hreflang="en">Kristy Strauss</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Topic</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/topics/our-community" hreflang="en">Our Community</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-story-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/arctic" hreflang="en">Arctic</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/climate-change" hreflang="en">Climate Change</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/earth-sciences" hreflang="en">Earth Sciences</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/graduate-students" hreflang="en">Graduate Students</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/research-innovation" hreflang="en">Research &amp; But his research and his passion for the work was what really drew me,” she says.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>Now part of Halfar’s research group studying changes in sea ice cover in northern Labrador, Dias and her co-researchers are developing sea-ice cover records for the past 1,000 years off the coast of Nunatsiavut and are examining coralline algae as part of their research. &nbsp;</p> <figure role="group" class="caption caption-drupal-media align-center"> <div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/scale_image_750_width_/public/2024-10/Sea-Ice-Minoli-Dias-crop.jpg?itok=zEWiH9VV" width="750" height="500" alt="&quot;&quot;" class="image-style-scale-image-750-width-"> </div> </div> <figcaption><em>Minoli Dias's view from the research vessel off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador (photo by Minoli Dias)</em></figcaption> </figure> <p>Dias says that coralline algae live for approximately 1,500 years and they grow in annual layers (like tree rings). The growth, she explains, is dependent on light. When the algae have more light, meaning there’s less sea ice in the water, they grow a lot thicker. When they have less light, meaning there’s more sea ice cover, the layers grow thinner. By examining these variations and growth over time along with chemical tracers, the research team can essentially watch the sea ice cover change.&nbsp;</p> <p>Dias conducted field work in the community of Agvituk (Hopedale), N.L. this past summer. The lab also explored multiple sites in Greenland, Norway, Nunavut and the Labrador coast.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>“If we can create a network of these types of ocean reconstructions, we’ll be able to have this baseline data going back several centuries that can then hopefully inform model projections that predict what future conditions will look like,” she says.&nbsp;</p> <p>Since joining the lab, Dias says she has had some incredible experiences – including a recent opportunity to work with members of the Hopedale community.&nbsp;</p> <p>“We’re not the experts. We don’t live there. It’s the people who live along the coast –&nbsp;and actually live the change and see the change –&nbsp;who are the experts,” she says. “When you speak to community members, they have a clear understanding of how changes occurred over time, and what is the importance of sea ice to these ecosystems.”&nbsp;</p> <p>Once she completes her PhD, Dias hopes to continue pursuing climate research by either working directly with impacted communities or working to address the effects of pollution or climate change.&nbsp;</p> <p>Dias says she feels inspired by the many women scientists who came before her, including her female professors who have served as role models in what traditionally has been a male-dominated field.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>“They paved the way for us to be able to do the work that we do, and to do it in relative comfort,” she says. “Having these women to look up to is what makes it possible for me to do the type of work that I do, and I hope I can make a similar contribution and pay it forward to the women that are coming after me.”&nbsp;</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Tue, 15 Oct 2024 17:18:44 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 309798 at Congratulations pour in for Geoffrey Hinton after Nobel win /news/congratulations-pour-geoffrey-hinton-after-nobel-win <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Congratulations pour in for Geoffrey Hinton after Nobel win</span> <div class="field field--name-field-featured-picture field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="eager" srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-10/2024-10-08-Hinton-Nobel-Celebration-%283%29-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=006T1tnK 370w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_740/public/2024-10/2024-10-08-Hinton-Nobel-Celebration-%283%29-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=SiTXIeog 740w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_1110/public/2024-10/2024-10-08-Hinton-Nobel-Celebration-%283%29-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=982sYJXx 1110w" sizes="(min-width:1200px) 1110px, (max-width: 1199px) 80vw, (max-width: 767px) 90vw, (max-width: 575px) 95vw" width="740" height="494" src="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-10/2024-10-08-Hinton-Nobel-Celebration-%283%29-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=006T1tnK" alt="&quot;&quot;"> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>mattimar</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2024-10-08T15:43:16-04:00" title="Tuesday, October 8, 2024 - 15:43" class="datetime">Tue, 10/08/2024 - 15:43</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Cutline</div> <div class="field__item"><p><em>(Photo by Johnny Guatto/University of Toronto)</em></p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-reporters field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/authors-reporters/mariam-matti" hreflang="en">Mariam Matti</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Topic</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/topics/our-community" hreflang="en">Our Community</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-story-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/alumni" hreflang="en">Alumni</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/artificial-intelligence" hreflang="en">Artificial Intelligence</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/computer-science" hreflang="en">Computer Science</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/faculty-arts-science" hreflang="en">Faculty of Arts &amp; The excitement, the joy radiated out of his office down the hall. The air was buzzing with possibility. He was famous for bursting into a room and pronouncing that, he now finally, after all these years, understood how the brain worked.&nbsp;Above all, he understood that research was a human endeavor. Research is really hard. It becomes personal. It's intertwined with tragedies and compromises. I saw him go through some of his own when I was a student in the group, and I went through my own. I remember when I was going through some health challenges, I went to him and I said, 'Geoff, sometimes it's really hard to go on.’ And he looked at me and he said, ’But we're not going to let that slow us down, will we?’"</p> <p>– <em><strong>Chris Maddison</strong>,&nbsp;assistant professor in °”ÍűTV’s departments of computer science and statistical sciences, Faculty of Arts &amp; Science</em></p> <figure role="group" class="caption caption-drupal-media align-center"> <div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/scale_image_750_width_/public/2024-10/2024-10-08-Hinton-Nobel-Celebration_2-crop.jpg?itok=fzaxySC5" width="750" height="500" alt="&quot;&quot;" class="image-style-scale-image-750-width-"> </div> </div> <figcaption><em>°”ÍűTV is the only computer science department with a Nobel Prize winner, says Professor Michael Brudno&nbsp;(photo by Johnny Guatto)</em></figcaption> </figure> <p>“It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to celebrate an award for somebody who has made huge contributions –&nbsp;obviously in AI broadly, [and] to this department. They invented neural networks that were not only inspired by the brain, but also by central notions in physics such as energy, temperature, system dynamics, energy barriers, the role of randomness and noise, connecting the local properties, e.g., of atoms or neurons, to global ones like entropy and attractors. And they went beyond the physics to show how these ideas could give rise to memory, learning and generative models; concepts which are still at the forefront of modern AI research. Their ideas inspired me so profoundly that I decided to choose learning in neural networks for my own research as a graduate student. They motivated me to look for abstract principles that could be as simple as the laws of physics, but could explain biological as well as artificial intelligence. I'm truly delighted for them and for our field."</p> <p><em>–&nbsp;<strong>Yoshua Bengio</strong>, professor at UniversitĂ© de MontrĂ©al and co-winner of the A.M Turing Award with Geoffrey Hinton and Yann LeCun</em></p> <p>“It was the first thing I saw in the morning. At 16, after a forced return to her native Albania, she emigrated to Canada carrying only a suitcase and teddy bear.</p> <p>Now a PhD candidate at the University of Toronto’s Centre for Criminology &amp; Sociolegal Studies, Zyfi is examining how public policy shapes the plight of asylum seekers and migrants in Canada. Her work is shedding valuable light on some of the little-known – and sometimes shocking – injustices faced by refugee claimants in a country widely thought to be among the most welcoming and multicultural in the world.</p> <p>“The work that I do is very much informed by my lived experiences,” she says. “It’s where I find the strength to do it.”</p> <p>Why is Zyfi examining the refugee experience through the lens of criminology and not political science?</p> <p>“Lots of people have asked me that,” she says. “Even I had moments when I’d wonder, ‘Am I in the right department?’ But the deeper I go into my research, the more confirmation I get that I am doing the right thing.”</p> <p>This is due to the phenomenon of “crimmigration,” &nbsp;a term that’s used to describe how refugee claimants are often subjected to processes normally associated with the criminal justice system.</p> <p>“Immigration is an administrative field, while the criminal justice system is a lot more heavy-handed,” Zyfi explains. “And yet, we’re using criminal justice mechanisms to deal with what should be an administrative process. That doesn’t make sense.”</p> <p>In some ways, she says, Canada’s approach to refugees is a good news story.</p> <p>In the last decade, for example, the country has welcomed more than 40,000 Syrian refugees, and has been in the vanguard of acceptance for those fleeing persecution on the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation.</p> <p>But there is darker side, too. Many Canadians are unaware that children can be held in detention with or without their parents and that adult asylum seekers who can’t&nbsp;be accommodated in holding centres have been detained in provincial jails alongside those serving criminal sentences.</p> <p>Canada is also one of the few countries in the Global North where there is no legal limit on detention, meaning that claimants can spend years in jails or holding centres before their cases are heard.</p> <p>“They rarely get access to legal aid and many of them can’t speak the language,” Zyfi says. “So they don’t even understand what’s happening. They’re unaware of their rights and terrified of being deported.”</p> <p>Zyfi says she is particularly interested in the role technology plays in immigration and asylum processes and application assessment procedures. In an effort to reduce dependence on migrant detention, some asylum seekers are now granted temporary freedom but monitored in ways that are highly controversial.</p> <p>These methods include the use of electronic ankle monitors as well as voice reporting via cellphone –&nbsp;both of which can fail if batteries or cell reception run out. Facial recognition software is also gaining in popularity.</p> <p>But even a small technical mistake, Zyfi argues, can place a claimant’s life in danger. “There’s this idea that technology is going to solve all our problems,” says Zyfi. “It’s going to make faster decisions, better decisions. The decisions are faster, but that doesn’t always mean that they are better.”</p> <p>Zyfi’s concern about the rights of asylum seekers is born from her own experiences.</p> <p>Born shortly after the fall of communism in Albania, her early life was spent amid the anarchy and civil insurrection that followed the collapse of the country’s economy. “We had to hide under the tables, because bullets could fly through at any minute,” she recalls. “One flew through our balcony window. The arms depots were open; anybody could get bullets, a grocery bag full of grenades, whatever they could find. It was a free-for-all.”</p> <p>Using a false name, Zyfi made her way to Australia with her mother and sister via a human smuggling network. But the family was expelled from Australia in 2005 when Albania was deemed to be a safe country of origin. “I remember my mother packing up our entire life in a shipping container,” she says.</p> <p>Four years later, Zyfi came to Canada and two years ago, after a lengthy series of applications and various immigration statuses, she was finally granted citizenship.</p> <p>Now, she is firmly committed to making life better for other migrants and refugees, including by giving them a bigger say in decisions that affect them. In policymaking, “our stories are not being incorporated in a meaningful way,” she says. “To me, that is the saddest part.”</p> <p>The groundswell of private support for Syrian refugees – Zyfi herself was an enthusiastic sponsor – shows that caring for survivors of global crisis is a Canadian value. But she says that civil society alone cannot provide the support needed, and the government can do more – not only for immigrants deemed to be economically desirable, but for those whose lives are in jeopardy.</p> <p>“Historically, immigration has been key to the Canadian economy. It has also been a fundamental tenet of nation-building and multiculturalism,” Zyfi says. “But we are doing the bare minimum. We have the capacity to do so much more.”</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Wed, 14 Aug 2024 16:08:31 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 308976 at °”ÍűTV urban studies course explores wildfire response in Canada's North /news/u-t-urban-studies-course-explores-wildfire-response-canada-s-north <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">°”ÍűTV urban studies course explores wildfire response in Canada's North</span> <div class="field field--name-field-featured-picture field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="eager" srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-08/GettyImages-499100302-forestfire-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=cb-kcskp 370w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_740/public/2024-08/GettyImages-499100302-forestfire-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=U6kRLHFK 740w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_1110/public/2024-08/GettyImages-499100302-forestfire-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=Y0SinzQP 1110w" sizes="(min-width:1200px) 1110px, (max-width: 1199px) 80vw, (max-width: 767px) 90vw, (max-width: 575px) 95vw" width="740" height="494" src="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-08/GettyImages-499100302-forestfire-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=cb-kcskp" alt="&quot;&quot;"> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>Christopher.Sorensen</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2024-08-12T15:57:57-04:00" title="Monday, August 12, 2024 - 15:57" class="datetime">Mon, 08/12/2024 - 15:57</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Cutline</div> <div class="field__item"><p><em>Clouds of smoke billow into the air as forest fires burn in the Northwest Territories in 2015, leaving trees damaged and charred (photo by Sherry Galey via Getty Images)</em></p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-reporters field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/authors-reporters/cynthia-macdonald" hreflang="en">Cynthia Macdonald</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Topic</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/topics/our-community" hreflang="en">Our Community</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-story-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/school-cities" hreflang="en">School of Cities</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/faculty-arts-science" hreflang="en">Faculty of Arts &amp; Science</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/geography-and-planning" hreflang="en">Geography and Planning</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/graduate-students" hreflang="en">Graduate Students</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/innis-college" hreflang="en">Innis College</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/john-h-daniels-faculty-architecture" hreflang="en">John H. Research shows that while 12 per cent of the entire Canadian population is at risk, that number rises to 32 per cent for on-reserve First Nations communities.</p> <p><strong>LĂ©o Jourdan</strong>, who is completing his master of science degree in forestry at the John H. How can resources be co-ordinated? And how can people work together to ensure a more organized response?”</p> <p>&nbsp;Jourdan, for his part, is proposing that Yellowknife adopt the principles of&nbsp;<a href="https://firesmartcanada.ca/about-firesmart/" target="_blank">FireSmart</a>, a national program that leads the development of programs and resources to help Canadians increase their resilience to wildfires.</p> <p>Mehta says Yellowknife’s mayor provided the group from °”ÍűTV with some recommendations of her own.&nbsp;“She gave an important critique of planning education in our country, noting that people rarely study the problems that cities in northern Canada are facing,” Mehta says. “Instead, we are overly focused on big cities like Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.”</p> <p>Roberts says that the policy recommendations written by Dart, Jourdan and the other students will be offered “not just to the mayor, but to everyone else we talked to – those working in the non-profit field and at the territorial level, as well as those who work with the Dene.</p> <p>“We’re now thinking about other ways of presenting this information, such as returning to Yellowknife to ensure that the dialogue we’ve started is able to continue.”</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Mon, 12 Aug 2024 19:57:57 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 308947 at °”ÍűTV team takes top spot in self-driving car challenge for 6th time in 7 years /news/u-t-team-takes-top-spot-self-driving-car-challenge-6th-time-7-years <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">°”ÍűTV team takes top spot in self-driving car challenge for 6th time in 7 years</span> <div class="field field--name-field-featured-picture field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="eager" srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-08/AUTODRIVE_24_5601-crop.jpg?h=3a919dd0&amp;itok=kFCXUnGZ 370w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_740/public/2024-08/AUTODRIVE_24_5601-crop.jpg?h=3a919dd0&amp;itok=YPAb6B8H 740w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_1110/public/2024-08/AUTODRIVE_24_5601-crop.jpg?h=3a919dd0&amp;itok=Q35dvO8b 1110w" sizes="(min-width:1200px) 1110px, (max-width: 1199px) 80vw, (max-width: 767px) 90vw, (max-width: 575px) 95vw" width="740" height="494" src="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-08/AUTODRIVE_24_5601-crop.jpg?h=3a919dd0&amp;itok=kFCXUnGZ" alt="UofT's self driving car avoids a mock moose crossing the road"> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>Christopher.Sorensen</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2024-08-07T13:42:55-04:00" title="Wednesday, August 7, 2024 - 13:42" class="datetime">Wed, 08/07/2024 - 13:42</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Cutline</div> <div class="field__item"><p><em>As part of the competition, the °”ÍűTV team’s autonomous vehicle had to react to obstacles such as a fake deer moving across the road (photo courtesy of aUToronto)</em></p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-reporters field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/6738" hreflang="en">Safa Jinje</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Topic</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/topics/our-community" hreflang="en">Our Community</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-story-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/alumni" hreflang="en">Alumni</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/artificial-intelligence" hreflang="en">Artificial Intelligence</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/faculty-applied-science-engineering" hreflang="en">Faculty of Applied Science &amp; The only reason we won is because everybody put in so much effort to test our vehicle every day.</p> <p>“That’s how we were able to get this reliable system across the line.” &nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-oembed-video field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item"><iframe src="/media/oembed?url=https%3A//youtu.be/gG7DG-t2aiQ%3Fsi%3DkYGqZF0-x-6a4MBn&amp;max_width=0&amp;max_height=0&amp;hash=6whKFK-X5NSAGZdfMqSydpcgBMCmEPw2x-2wTgtl2jw" width="200" height="113" class="media-oembed-content" loading="eager" title="AutoDrive Challenge II Year 3 Highlight Video"></iframe> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Wed, 07 Aug 2024 17:42:55 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 308926 at
