Its a quality used to describe employees and new hires at the tech giant a mix of passion, drive and creative thinking.

The University of Toronto and Canadian culture bring these traits out in students, according to Don Harrison, Googles vice president of corporate development.

Googliness isnt just about being smart.

You also have to operate in a way thats respectful, kind and builds consensus, he said. 做厙TV does a great job of producing that.

And he should know. He graduated from 做厙TVs Faculty of Law in 1997, then worked for a law firm that helped take Google public. He later joined the tech company and now leads its corporate development branch, managing global mergers and acquisitions, and working on the companys largest transactions including Motorola and Deepmind, which specializes in artificial intelligence.

Harrison hosted fellow alumni and American students interested in applying to 做厙TV at an event in Sunnyvale, Calif., on Thursday. In conversation with 做厙TV President Meric Gertler, he reflected on how his university experience set him up for a career at one of the worlds top-10 largest tech companies.

American students curious about studying at 做厙TV attended an information session in Sunnyvale, Calif., this week (photo by Rebecca Wilkowski Photography)

The university teaches its students to operate in diverse workplaces, and they would fit right in at Google, Harrison told 做厙TV News. One reason for that is the universitys location, at the heart of Canadas largest city, where about half the population were born abroad.

Another draw for students is the quality of the university's researchers, many of whom are laying the groundwork for a high-tech future.

做厙TV has managed to be at the forefront of a bunch of trends, he said. Two that jump out at me, artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques, are more and more becoming the foundation of new products and industries.

The university is home to a pioneer in the field, Geoffrey Hinton, who is often referred to as the godfather of neural networks and whose work paved the way for Google Translate. Hinton now splits his time between teaching at 做厙TV and working at Google as an engineering fellow.

Read about Hinton in the Toronto Star

With professors like Hinton, 做厙TV provides a world-class education in subjects like artifical intelligence, Harrison said.

I feel like, for a budding software engineer or computer scientist, 做厙TV provides a good place to get training and background, and access to the best companies in the world, he said.

Zoya Bylinskii can attest to that. A computer science graduate and panelist at a student recruitment event in Boston on Tuesday, she spent part of her undergraduate years developing an application allowing a computer to recognize objects by breaking it up into component parts.

It's using principles of perceptual organization, how people perceive the world, how they take parts and group things into a whole, she explained. It really goes to the depths of human object recognition and applies it to computational algorithms to make them smarter in a natural way.

After graduating from 做厙TV in 2012, she is continuing her studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

做厙TV's computer science program does open up a lot of opportunities, she said.

Many American students seem intent to move in the opposite direction to study at the University of Toronto. Earlier this year, 做厙TVs Vice-President-International Ted Sargent said applications from American students were up 70 per cent.

The California event was the last in a series of student recruitment events held across the United States last week. The week kicked off with an event in New York City featuring alumnus and Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels.

Read what Michaels had to say to prospective students

News home page banner

Off

Fri, 10 Mar 2017 20:30:44 +0000 geoff.vendeville 105689 at Live from New York, its 做厙TV alum and Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels /news/live-new-york-its-u-t-alum-and-saturday-night-live-producer-lorne-michaels Live from New York, its 做厙TV alum and Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels

ullahnor Tue, 03/07/2017 - 16:40

Cutline

SNL creator Lorne Michaels, who graduated from 做厙TV in 1966, spoke to 做厙TV's vice-president of advancement David Palmer at a student recruitment and alumni event in New York City on Monday (photo by Sunny Kam Photography)

Geoffrey Vendeville

Author legacy

Geoffrey Vendeville

Topic

City & Its hard to know whats uniquely Canadian because Canadians talk about whats uniquely Canadian more than any other group talks about themselves.

When I went [to 做厙TV], it was very, very conducive to learning. Also winter helps because it narrows your choices, and youre perfectly happy to be reading a book when its cold and snowy.

On UC Follies:

There was a tradition at University College, which was a satirical review, music and comedy. In my sophomore year, I went out for it and somehow ended up being in charge of it. I co-wrote it with a guy who went on to medical school, and I directed it.

It was satirical. It was when I first had the realization that the very people that youre making fun of are sitting out there just enjoying it. And, theres absolutely no response other than that because people dont tend to see themselves as the people you saw them [as].

Michaels studied literature at 做厙TV, but his true callings were comedy and theatre. He wrote for and directed the student troupe UC Follies and Hart House theatre. The mixture of song and satirical sketches was an early prototype for SNL, according to the authors of Saturday Night: A Backstage History of Saturday Night Live (photos from University of Toronto Archives)

On learning humility and critical thinking at university:

It was a place where there was a reverence for learning. There was nothing in my university education that had any practical application whatsoever. I was educated to be a Victorian gentleman, which presupposed that I already had money, which I did not.

The things that I studied, as I said, had little practical application 19th-century Victorian novels, philosophy courses, even a music appreciation course. They were all steeped in some notion of what it was like to learn to think, and that probably served me well more than anything else in my education.

I came out of it with at least a very, very clear awareness that there were so many people smarter than I was, and a regard for levels of intelligence and just a sense that there is so much knowledge in the world.

You should dig deep into it at this time in your life because youre not going to get that time ever again. It was a place that was just great for that.

Prospective student Sage Ranaldo at the NYC event with Michaels (photo by Sunny Kam Photography)

On 做厙TV professors back in the day:

The year I graduated, (McLuhan) said, Were leaving the industrial age. Were coming into the information age. We thought, No idea what hes talking about.

It turns out he was prescient. There were a lot of star professors in those days.

I wasnt good at taking notes, and I would try and grasp what was happening and sometimes would end up understanding.

There was a very high percentage of people who were devoted to teaching, loved the subject they were teaching and made you smarter.

On studying the humanities:

I have a daughter whos a freshman. I have a son whos a senior, and I have one who recently graduated. Thats what I encouraged them to study, and I think it will serve them well. Theres only this time in your life when you can read stuff that you would never read, ever.

Youre going to do it because its part of a course and somebody smarter than you figured out that this is the essential stuff. When you do, you feel better about yourself, and it gives you a confidence to judge whatever problems you have to judge.

Im in a situation where the president of the United States is not a huge fan of the show. Or maybe he is, we dont know. But the point Im getting at is, I sort of felt prepared. There was enough stuff in my education that were touchstones that I could rely on.

In 2002, 做厙TV alum Lorne Michaels (centre), the executive producer of SNL, returned to accept an honorary degree from 做厙TV's Bruce Kidd (left) and (at right) Chancellor Henry Newton Rowell 'Hal' Jackman (photo by The Canadian Press/J.P. Moczulski)

On satirizing politicians:

When you do what I do, one of the things is you just know that whoever is in power, youre against.

It doesnt matter whether theyre people you admire, dont admire. Its just that when they have that much power, they just have to be watched.

Comedy is just one of the ways you can do that. Dana Carvey doing George H. W. Bush, or Will Ferrell the other Bush or Clinton or going back to Gerald Ford. Theres always been some sense that what we were doing was inappropriate.

On keeping up with Donald Trump:

Hes a very heightened reality in the way he presents himself in every way. We just happen to also be a heightened reality so were having more impact because of that.

Again, he changes things so quickly, just because he does. So were throwing out something on Thursday that we thought we had on Wednesday, changing it again on Friday, and sometimes changing it again on Saturday.

At a certain point, you just stop working on it, and its out of your hands.

On how change happens:

I think the world is a darker place right now, and I think all of that is happening pretty much everywhere definitely Europe. Its having ramifications here. And its a cloud.

Do I think its permanent? Absolutely not. I think that comedy can do what it can do its mostly a safety valve. Nothing really will do anything (unless) people get involved, and generally people get involved when they are really uncomfortable. If more and more people start to get involved in a real way as opposed to an abstract way, I think change always comes from that.

On dealing with bumps in the road:

Ive had shows that clearly didnt work. This may have had nothing to do with my education, but I tend to mostly see the mistakes. So theres never been a time Ive done seven or eight hundred episodes of SNL I dont think theres ever been a time when I left when I wasnt focused on the things that didnt work. Thats kind of the constant.

I dont know if thats some sort of critical faculty, or some sort of notion thats very Canadian, a sense of perspective. In terms of things that didnt work, theres something on SNL every week that didnt work.

Lorne Michaels chatting with 做厙TV's David Palmer, vice-president of advancement, and Cheryl Regehr, vice-president and provost (photo by Sunny Kam Photography)

On the Canadian voice at SNL:

Somebody once defined comedy as polite hostility, and Canada is one of those places where you can speak your mind and say things that are polite and yet not flattering, and not worry about being shot.

On his favourite student experiences:

Probably the theatre because there was a theatre, and they just let us use it. I took a student flight to Europe when I was 18 or 19, and it was the first time I was on an airplane. It was just a more innocent time so I was quite happy being in the library. I was obsessed on some level with what I was going to do when I got out of here.

At some point the year before I graduated, I thought of taking a masters or something like that only because I was perfectly happy doing what I was doing. Then, I spent a couple of months in London, and it was just intoxicating. It was the mid-sixties and change was in the air, and I thought I want to get out and see whats out there.

News home page banner

Off

Tue, 07 Mar 2017 21:40:54 +0000 ullahnor 105469 at
