This marks the first time the university has participated in the UBI ranking program, which produces its global benchmark report every two years.</p> <p>The independent firm, which assessed almost 1,400 programs in 53 countries, announced the rankings&nbsp;in four categories in Toronto at the 2018 World Incubation Summit.</p> <p>The news comes as TV begins its second annual Entrepreneurship @ TV Week on Monday. The week-long community celebration, which involves talks with business leaders and workshops for student entrepreneurs, culminates on Thursday, March 1 with the Startup Showcase, where members of the public can talk with TV’s student entrepreneurs and see their innovative products firsthand.</p> <p>“By highlighting the impact and performance of these programs, we are not only helping incubators and accelerators to become more efficient, but we are also assisting government officials in developing their respective innovation ecosystems,” said UBI Global CEO and co-founder Ali Amin in the statement.</p> <p>“The benchmark and rankings also enable corporations to make informed partnership and investment decisions about the incubation programs and the startups they intend to engage with.”</p> <p>Unlike most universities, TV has nine startup incubators across its three campuses, which help foster student and researcher startups at all stages of development and in a wide variety of areas, from artificial intelligence and quantum computing to health-care innovations and mobile apps for consumers.</p> <p>There are also 200 courses and programs available and the opportunity to attend countless events which attract more than 25,000 year student participants each year. The community also has new space&nbsp; for entrepreneurs to work, network and hold meetings at ONRamp, which opened last fall, as well as the state-of-the-art Centre for Engineering Innovation &amp; Entrepreneurship, which will open soon.</p> <p>“For such a large school, it just seems like everyone has this buy-in [for entrepreneurship] which you just don’t typically see,” said <strong>Gurinder (Gary) Sangha</strong>, a serial entrepreneur who recently joined TV’s 22-member Entrepreneurship Leadership Council.</p> <p>“It’s not a check-the-box, ‘we do this, too’ kind of thing. TV grads are considered top candidates in the eyes of employers around the globe, <a href="https://www.timeshighereducation.com/features/which-countries-and-universities-produce-most-employable-graduates">a new university ranking</a> suggests.</p> <p>TV came in 13th in Times Higher Education’s global university employability ranking, up one place from last year. That puts TV in a class with Ivy League schools and ahead of the University of Oxford and Berkeley.</p> <p>The university has focused more on students' core competencies, says TV&nbsp;President&nbsp;<strong>Meric Gertler</strong>.&nbsp;“We've made sure they communicate well, that they have an opportunity to work in teams. Those efforts are paying off,” he told the <a href="https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/canadian-university-degrees-still-highly-valued-by-employers-worldwide-survey/article36997630/"><em>Globe and Mail</em></a>.</p> <p>TV's performance may also be due to its high academic standards, he says. “While our students may not always appreciate that, it seems that employers do.”</p> <p>Among public universities, TV was first in North America and fifth in the world, behind the University of Cambridge, Technical University of Munich, University of Tokyo, and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.</p> <p>For the sixth year running, TV was the top Canadian institution on the list. The other Canadian universities that cracked the top 100 were McGill (18th), the University of Montreal/HEC (44th), the University of British Columbia (45th) and McMaster (74th).&nbsp;</p> <p>The ranking was based on research by the German polling institute Trendence, which surveyed 6,000 firms on the topic of which universities produced the&nbsp;“best graduates in terms of employability.”</p> <style type="text/css">.table-stats td { background-color: #edf2f8; padding: 8px; border: 1px #002a5c solid; } .table-stats-title { background-color: #002a5c; font-size: 18px; text-align: center; padding: 8px;} .callout { background-color: #33A7DE !important; font-size: 16px; color: #fff; } .secondary-color-table { color:#002a5c; } </style> <p>Paprakis credits TV for helping her get a foot in the door for software and back-end engineering internships at TripAdvisor and Uken Games, a local games studio. She found both opportunities through a career fair on campus. “TV is a big target for a lot of companies,” she says.</p> <p>She worked long hours in&nbsp;university. Although she had a rule against pulling all-nighters, she sometimes got home at 2 a.m., only to start studying again at 6. She was rewarded for her hard work in school and internships when it came time to apply for jobs in her last semester. &nbsp;</p> <p>She applied to seven or eight employers and received about four offers. Alphabet, Google’s parent company, offered her a job in New York City, but that was too far away from Paprakis’s family, friends and boyfriend in Toronto. Fortunately, she had options.</p> <p>“I was waiting for SnapChat and they were the last ones to get back to me. They were the ones I was hoping the most for.”</p> <p>Snap Inc., the technology and social media company behind SnapChat and Bitmoji, took her on as a software engineer at its Toronto office. She works on user interfaces for SnapChat, Bitmoji and internal tools, and conducts interviews to help with hiring.</p> <p>TV’s results in the Times Higher Education employability ranking mirror its performance in another independent study. <a href="/news/u-t-grads-have-one-best-employability-outcomes-world-new-ranking-says">The 2018 QS Graduate Employability Rankings</a> put TV 15th, up from 19th last year, in a survey of 600 top universities. TV was once again head of the pack among Canadian universities.</p> <p>“We’re pleased to see TV’s excellent track record for graduate outcomes and employment continue to be recognized,” says&nbsp;<strong>Cheryl Regehr,</strong> TV’s vice-president and provost. “And we’re extremely proud of our undergraduate and graduate students and the success they achieve after graduation.”</p> <p>For <strong>Tony Liang</strong>, a TV education in electrical and computer engineering, from a bachelor’s degree to PhD, was his ticket to getting a job at SpaceX, the aerospace company founded by Elon Musk that aims to colonize Mars. Liang, who graduated in 2015, is an antenna engineer and helps design satellites at SpaceX’s office in Redmond, Wash., near Seattle. He is working on complex phased array antennae for satellites that would provide fast global internet coverage.</p> <p>“Even though I’m down in the States, here they know the name University of Toronto,” he says. In his area, electromagnetics, the university has professors who are recognized as leaders in the field, including <strong>George Eleftheriades</strong>, a pioneer in metamaterials.</p> <p>“My supervisor <strong>Sean Hum</strong> has active research on reflectarrays, which is something often used in space applications. That bodes well with a company like SpaceX.”</p> <p>Liang’s bachelor’s degree gave him a solid grounding in electrical engineering, he says.</p> <p>“It’s all about fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals. And it really shows when someone has that versus someone who doesn’t.”</p> <h3><a href="https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/canadian-university-degrees-still-highly-valued-by-employers-worldwide-survey/article36997630/">Read more in the<em> </em><em>Globe and Mail</em></a></h3> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Thu, 16 Nov 2017 05:00:00 +0000 geoff.vendeville 122040 at TV 13th in the world in psychology, excels in health and life sciences: THE rankings /news/u-t-13th-world-psychology-excels-health-and-life-sciences-rankings <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">TV 13th in the world in psychology, excels in health and life sciences: THE rankings</span> <div class="field field--name-field-featured-picture field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="eager" srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/Fall-campus-by-Laura-Pedersen-%28lead%29.jpg?h=afdc3185&amp;itok=cFgwlHAk 370w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_740/public/Fall-campus-by-Laura-Pedersen-%28lead%29.jpg?h=afdc3185&amp;itok=JgACbCiM 740w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_1110/public/Fall-campus-by-Laura-Pedersen-%28lead%29.jpg?h=afdc3185&amp;itok=mIDpnZTv 1110w" sizes="(min-width:1200px) 1110px, (max-width: 1199px) 80vw, (max-width: 767px) 90vw, (max-width: 575px) 95vw" width="740" height="494" src="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/Fall-campus-by-Laura-Pedersen-%28lead%29.jpg?h=afdc3185&amp;itok=cFgwlHAk" alt="Photo of University of Toronto sign on building"> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>geoff.vendeville</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2017-11-08T00:00:00-05:00" title="Wednesday, November 8, 2017 - 00:00" class="datetime">Wed, 11/08/2017 - 00:00</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Cutline</div> <div class="field__item">(photo by Laura Pedersen)</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-reporters field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/authors-reporters/geoffrey-vendeville" hreflang="en">Geoffrey Vendeville</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Topic</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/topics/global-lens" hreflang="en">Global Lens</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-story-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/computer-science" hreflang="en">Computer Science</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/faculty-arts-science" hreflang="en">Faculty of Arts &amp; Science</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/international-rankings" hreflang="en">International Rankings</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/life-sciences" hreflang="en">Life Sciences</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/psychology" hreflang="en">Psychology</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/times-higher-education" hreflang="en">Times Higher Education</a></div> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><div>The University of Toronto ranks 13th in the world for psychology –&nbsp;in the company of elite American and British universities&nbsp;– in <a href="https://www.timeshighereducation.com/world-university-rankings/by-subject">the Times Higher Education’s latest university rankings by subject</a>.</div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div>Times Higher Education (THE) ranks universities in 11 subject areas, but the company is only releasing a few subject results at a time. Psychology&nbsp;encompasses a range of sub-specialties, including educational, sport and clinical psychology.</div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div>“TV was the capital on the map for decades in terms of understanding human memory – and that’s still an area where we have tremendous strengths,” he says.&nbsp;</div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div>In his undergraduate studies in the U.S., Rule was introduced to the ideas of <a href="http://www.provost.utoronto.ca/awards/uprofessors.htm">University Professor</a>&nbsp;Emeritus&nbsp;<strong>Fergus Craik</strong> and Professor Emeritus&nbsp;<strong>Endel Tulving</strong>, who did seminal work on different types of memory, including episodic memory (remembering particular events) and semantic memory (remembering generally what things are or do).</div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div>Their work is so fundamental “that we almost take it for granted now because it’s so basic to what’s developed since,” Rule says.</div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div>In recent years, the department has built on its strengths and expanded into computational cognitive neuroscience – applying mathematical models to understanding how the brain works, especially in perception and memory.&nbsp;</div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div>At <strong>Amy Finn</strong>'s lab in Sidney Smith Hall, researchers look at how brain development affects learning.</div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div>“Brain structures don't develop at the same rate, with some developing earlier than others,” explains Finn, an assistant professor in the department of psychology.&nbsp;“The two neural systems that I focus heavily on underlie what we call procedural memory (or implicit memory, “knowing how”) and declarative memory (explicit or verbalizable memory “knowing what”),” she says. “The procedural form appears to mature earlier.</div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div>“Current studies are looking at what this means for the ways in which children learn all kinds of information differently.”</div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div>Some of&nbsp;her research may help answer the perplexing question: Why do children have an easier time than adults learning a new language? In one study, she and her co-authors found that the harder adults tried to learn an artificial language, the worse they were at understanding its structure. She suggests that adults' more developed cognitive skills may actually impede learning language, especially when it comes to picking up on nuances and exceptions.</div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div> <h3><a href="http://time.com/3013439/language-trying-hurts-learning/">Read more about Finn's research in <em>Time </em>magazine</a></h3> </div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div><img alt="Amy Finn" class="media-image attr__typeof__foaf:Image img__fid__6656 img__view_mode__media_original attr__format__media_original" src="/sites/default/files/20171107---Amy-Finn-drawing-on-glass-%28embed%29.jpg" style="width: 750px; height: 500px;" typeof="foaf:Image"><br> <em>At Amy Finn's lab in Sidney Smith Hall, researchers examine how cognitive and brain development affect learning outcomes (photo by Geoffrey Vendeville)</em></div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div>In recent weeks THE has released rankings for ten subjects. Each was then evaluated and ranked using 10 different metrics, including&nbsp;published academic papers and patent filings, an indication of its ability to commercialize its discoveries.</p> <p>Overall, the University of Toronto continues to be the highest ranked Canadian university and one of the top ranked public universities in the five most prestigious international rankings: Times Higher Education, QS World Rankings, Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, U.S. News Best Global Universities and National Taiwan University.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Wed, 27 Sep 2017 14:42:42 +0000 rasbachn 117335 at TV grads have one of the best employability outcomes in the world, new ranking says /news/u-t-grads-have-one-best-employability-outcomes-world-new-ranking-says <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">TV grads have one of the best employability outcomes in the world, new ranking says</span> <div class="field field--name-field-featured-picture field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="eager" srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2017-09-12-convocation-resized.jpg?h=afdc3185&amp;itok=wxJGqYXq 370w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_740/public/2017-09-12-convocation-resized.jpg?h=afdc3185&amp;itok=6ge7EUH- 740w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_1110/public/2017-09-12-convocation-resized.jpg?h=afdc3185&amp;itok=Pfh_-1Oe 1110w" sizes="(min-width:1200px) 1110px, (max-width: 1199px) 80vw, (max-width: 767px) 90vw, (max-width: 575px) 95vw" width="740" height="494" src="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2017-09-12-convocation-resized.jpg?h=afdc3185&amp;itok=wxJGqYXq" alt="Picture of convocation"> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>rasbachn</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2017-09-12T10:14:00-04:00" title="Tuesday, September 12, 2017 - 10:14" class="datetime">Tue, 09/12/2017 - 10:14</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Cutline</div> <div class="field__item">(photo by Makeda Marc-Ali)</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-reporters field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/authors-reporters/jennifer-robinson" hreflang="en">Jennifer Robinson</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-legacy field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Author legacy</div> <div class="field__item">Jennifer Robinson</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-story-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/international-rankings" hreflang="en">International Rankings</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/qs-graduate-employability-rankings" hreflang="en">QS Graduate Employability Rankings</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-subheadline field--type-string-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Subheadline</div> <div class="field__item">TV is the top-ranked Canadian university and 15th in the world in the 2018 QS Graduate Employability Rankings</div> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>Globally in-demand graduates, alumni in leadership roles and high levels of engagement with employers are just some of the reasons the University of Toronto has one of the best graduate employability outcomes in the world, says a new independent study.</p> <p>TV is the top-ranked Canadian university and 15th in the world – up from 19th last year – in the <a href="https://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/employability-rankings/2018">2018 QS Graduate Employability Rankings</a>, which surveyed 600 top global universities in its annual report released Tuesday.</p> <p>The 15th placement means TV is among the top three per cent in the 2018 QS Graduate Employability Rankings.
