Their creativity, intellectual prowess and dedication are vital to the universityā€™s mission of generating solutions to the most pressing challenges of our time,ā€ saidā€ÆTrevor Young, °µĶųTVā€™s vice-president and provost.

ā€œAt the same time, financial pressures can have a detrimental impact on studentsā€™ well-being and ability to advance their research. By increasing our financial support, we hope to alleviate some of that pressure and improve the graduate student experience, ensuring that our programs can continue to recruit and retain the next generation of exceptional scholars.ā€

An estimated 2,800 domestic and international PhD students ā€“ more than half of the funded cohort ā€“ will see their funding increase under the new measure.

The new funding commitment comes as governments around the world increasingly recognize research as an engine of economic innovation. In its 2024 budget, Canadaā€™s federal government made a significant reinvestment in the countryā€™s research and talent. This included $1.8 billion over five years to the federal granting councils and $825 million to federally funded graduate scholarships, raising the value of doctoral scholarships to $40,000.

The federally supported scholarships, however, are competitive ā€“ most students do not receive them. The new funding commitment from °µĶųTV raises the minimum level that all PhD and SJD students receive.

ā€œI have always loved °µĶųTV, and it has allowed me to excel to places that I could only dream of. However, many times I deeply struggled to balance my academic aspirations with the intense demands of living and studying,ā€ said Tina Keshavarzian, a PhD candidate in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine's department of medical biophysics whose research focuses on using single-cell sequencing, data science and machine learning to understand how cancers become more aggressive. The increased funding, she said, ā€œcan provide the stability students need to engage in their research and research community, leading to better academic outcomes and shorter times to completion.ā€Æ

ā€œWhen students feel supported and fulfilled, it creates a positive ripple effect in their academic teams and the entire university ecosystem.ā€

The updated base funding package will be primarily supported by funds from divisional sources ā€“ such as research grants, fellowships and other funding streams administered by individual faculties and graduate units ā€“ with additional support from the universityā€™s central budget to soften the financial impacts on some academic divisions.

ā€œI want to acknowledge, the tremendous leadership from deans across the universityā€ said Joshua Barker, vice-provost, graduate research and education & dean of the School of Graduate Studies. ā€œIncreasing graduate funding for our PhD and SJD students is truly a collaborative effort, one that requires commitment from all our partners ā€“ graduate units, faculty members, the university advancement teams and the universityā€™s senior leadership. Together, we can meet this challenge and provide the support our graduate students deserve.ā€

°µĶųTV has also launched a PhD scholarship matching program that seeks to create 250 new PhD awards as part of the Defy Gravity fundraising campaign. A donorā€™s $100,000 gift, combined with °µĶųTV matching funds, will create a $250,000 endowed award, which will generate an annual income of approximately $10,000. This will combine with other sources of funding to increase the pool of funds available for PhD students.

ā€œPhDs are our most research-intensive degrees and the students who pursue them spend a lot of time at the university,ā€ Barker said. ā€œTheir work has helped make °µĶųTV the highest ranked university in Canada and one of the worldā€™s top research institutions ā€“ and a large number of our PhDs go on to work across Canada in both academia and the private sector, strengthening the countryā€™s economy and innovation landscape.

ā€œInvesting in our PhDs means investing in Canadaā€™s future.ā€

Barker noted the new funding initiative comes on the heels of extensive research and consultations. He pointed to °µĶųTVā€™s annualā€ÆGraduate Student Experience in the Research University (gradSERU) surveys, in which a substantial number of respondents cited financial pressure as an obstacle to their academic progress.

In fall 2022, °µĶųTV convened a Graduate Funding Working Group ā€“ chaired by Barker and comprising faculty members, divisional leaders and students ā€“ to examine the graduate funding landscape and make recommendations. The working groupā€Æissued its report the following year, outlining its considerations and recommendations.

ā€œWe've heard the feedback, and the institution is now stepping up to do what's necessary to invest in our PhD students' well-being and success,ā€ Barker said.

Keshavarzian, a member of the tri-campus working group who previously directed Temerty Medicine's graduate representation committee, said the working group was key to understanding and addressing the concerns of graduate students across °µĶųTV's three campuses.

ā€œThis structure has allowedā€Æus to bring together diverse perspectives and create solutions at a university-wide level, rather than fragmenting the responsibility among various departments,ā€ said Keshavarzian, who earned her honours bachelor of science degree at °µĶųTV before returning for graduate studies.ā€Æā€œIā€™m incredibly proud to be part of an institution willing to take on such hard work, aligning resources and leadership to address challenges systematically.

ā€œThis collaborative approach has helped ensure that our university remains responsive to the needs of graduate students and committed to creating an environment where they can thrive both academically and personally.ā€

Read more at the School of Graduate Studies

News home page banner

Off

Tue, 12 Nov 2024 13:00:55 +0000 rahul.kalvapalle 310523 at Math grad says °µĶųTV taught him to 'learn how to learn' /news/math-grad-says-u-t-taught-him-learn-how-learn Math grad says °µĶųTV taught him to 'learn how to learn'

rahul.kalvapalle Wed, 11/06/2024 - 15:15

Cutline

Sean Fridkin, who earned a bachelor's in math and computer science, counts University Professor Emeritus and Nobel Prize-winner Geoffrey Hinton among his inspirations (supplied image)

Rahul Kalvapalle

Topic

Our Community

Convocation 2024

Computer Science

Faculty of Arts & Plus, the people are great ... itā€™s a great place to learn, grow and network.ā€

Fridkin spoke to °µĶųTV News about his interest in math and computer science, plans for the future and thoughts on how students can get the most out of their undergraduate years:

How did you become interested in mathematics and computer science?

I think math is about trying to understand the world. All around, you have things going on, things happening, and math is seeing the patterns and getting a deeper understanding for whatā€™s going on. Thatā€™s always interested me. I think it interests most people ā€“ they just donā€™t know that itā€™s called math and thereā€™s a language for it.

The way I did my math major is I took a bunch of courses in different fields, but the main thing that unifies them is they teach you to think about the world in different ways. You have classes about the closeness of objects, analysis, topology, youā€™ve got to think about different types of infinities ā€¦ You expand the way in which you think, and that interested me more than any specific path within mathematics.

In terms of computer science, I really like numerical methods, where you try to approximate ā€“ given some data ā€“ and interpolate with models to predict real things. I find machine learning numerical methods really fun.

What was your approach to learning while at °µĶųTV?

The number one goal for me in university was to learn how to learn ā€“ and learn how to think about new things and discover new ways of thinking. Thatā€™s the thing °µĶųTV gave me. You get the opportunity to talk to lots of different people, lots of different perspectives and learn from professors who are very experienced in the field and often have a unique way of thinking about different problems.

Also, with the assignments, you have to push yourself and thatā€™s what I enjoyed about it. It was a little different from high school, where an assignment might take you 30 minutes. Here, for some of the math classes, I would have to initially spend maybe a couple of days on one assignment. And I learned a lot from that. I think itā€™s going to impact me, not only as I go further in my career, but also in life.

What are your plans for your career and education going forward?

Iā€™m looking for computer science roles. I want to learn from interesting people and work on interesting problems. Thatā€™s the main goal. I donā€™t have any specific field that Iā€™m going for within computer science ā€“ just interesting problems and people who I know Iā€™ll be able to learn from and who I admire and respect.

I really enjoy learning, but I think most learning can be done informally, on your own or with good people at a company. But certainly, if thereā€™s something interesting that I want to learn more about and that I canā€™t do on my own, I would 100 per cent go back to school.

Long term, I want to transition to something in the machine learning world.

What would be your advice to students starting university?

I think the actual coursework is secondary to what you do in university. You should learn how to approach new problems ... For me, since I was going into math and computer science, I read a little bit of math stuff and I mostly worked on brain teaser problems. Two years later, he struck out on his own, working various menial jobs to get by ā€“ including as a dishwasher and as a poultry companyā€™s ā€œchicken catcher.ā€

ā€œFor me to get through all those circumstances in life, I had to fight to be able to succeed,ā€ Hall says.

And succeed, he did. Hall is now one of Canadaā€™s most influential people ā€“ a major player on Bay Street, an investor and TV personality on CBCā€™s Dragonsā€™ Den and a philanthropist dedicated to tackling systemic racism in the business world and beyond.

At an Oct. 28 convocation ceremony for graduates from the Faculty of Arts & Science, Hall will be officially installed as the 35th chancellor of the University of Toronto. He will then proceed to confer more than 4,000 degrees to graduating students during 10 ceremonies in Convocation Hall throughout the week.

Hall says heā€™s honoured to serve as an advocate and ambassador for an institution committed to empowering the next generation of leaders and changemakers drawn from all sections of society.

ā€œThe University of Toronto, in my opinion, is the biggest source of upward mobility in Canada,ā€ said Hall, who began his term as chancellor on July 1, succeeding Rose Patten.

In particular, Hall cited the diversity of °µĶųTV's student body, with representation from 180 countries and territories, and the university's extensive student financial supports ā€“ which include a pledge that no student admitted to the university should be prevented from studying because of a lack of financial means ā€“ as key elements that are setting the stage for a brighter future.

ā€œThink about the impact that will have on our society moving forward,ā€ he says. ā€œThis is why I wanted to be a part of this university. This is where change happens.ā€

For Hall, change didnā€™t come quickly or easily. After he moved out of his fatherā€™s home, he worked during the day and took courses in the evening to earn a law clerk certificate. He began his Bay Street journey as a mailroom clerk and law clerk, before eventually landing his first managerial role at CIBC Mellon, as a relationship manager.

As a young Black man managing 11 employees, many of whom were much older and white, Hall said earning the respect of his team was far from straightforward, teaching him importance of leaving his ego at the door.

ā€œI donā€™t necessarily want to be the smartest person in the room. I want to be the person who figures the room out and understands how people there operate,ā€ he says.

Hall adds that figuring out what made his reports tick helped him turn his biggest detractors into powerful allies.

Years later, Hall would confront doubters again when he came up with a business idea for a service that provides strategic advice to shareholders on corporate governance matters. He pitched it to his then-employers. ā€œThey thought it was nuts,ā€ he says.

Undeterred, he approached banks for a loan so he could build the company on his own. ā€œAnd they go, ā€˜Thatā€™s so wacky, weā€™re not going to fund that.ā€™ā€

Eventually, Hall convinced his wife to borrow $100,000, using their house as collateral. He used the funds to set up his firm, Kingsdale Advisors. That was in 2003. Today, Kingsdale is regarded one of Canadaā€™s top shareholder services and advisory firms, while Hall is one of the most respected power brokers in Canadian business.

In recent years, his reputation has expanded beyond executive boardrooms into living rooms across the country as a sought-after investor on CBCā€™s Dragonā€™s Den, where he says heā€™s constantly inspired by the creativity and drive of Canadaā€™s entrepreneurs. ā€œMost people come up with ideas in their mind, but entrepreneurs actually act on them ā€“ even ideas that are far-fetched in a lot of cases ā€“ and make it happen in spite of naysayers telling them they canā€™t do it,ā€ Hall says.

Hall says heā€™s passionate about using his platform to help uplift people from underrepresented backgrounds.

In 2020, following the killing of George Floyd by police officers in Minneapolis, he set up the BlackNorth Initiative, an NGO that provides scholarships for students, mentorship and networking for entrepreneurs, and a homeownership bridge program to help Black families own a home.

ā€œ°µĶųTV ownership allowed me to start Kingsdale and create the value that I have today,ā€ Hall said. ā€œI want to create that same pride and opportunity for as many under-served families as possible.ā€

Hall has also sought to contribute to the empowerment of entrepreneurs through WeShall Investments, a private equity firm dedicated to supporting BIPOC-owned ventures.

Hall is mindful of the fact that his success story ā€“ and those of other immigrants, people of colour and people from other underprivileged backgrounds ā€“ shouldnā€™t be used to downplay the scale of inequality in society.

ā€œHow many others are out there who have been deprived from fulfilling their true potential?ā€ he asks.

A staunch believer in °µĶųTVā€™s mission to empower people of all backgrounds to flourish, Hall said he urges students to adopt a positive, forward-looking attitude to overcome obstacles.

He cited, as an example, Cree actor, artist and filmmaker Shirley Cheechoo, who said she preferred to be recognized as a ā€œwarriorā€ rather than a ā€œsurvivorā€ of Canadaā€™s horrific residential school system. She made the remark during a keynote address at a °µĶųTV event to mark Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, which Hall attended.

ā€œI was successful in fighting, and itā€™s now my job to show people that in order for you to go through things successfully, you have to be a fighter,ā€ Hall says.

ā€œItā€™s all about us changing our mindset and being more positive. If we do that, we can walk through life appreciating every day, celebrating every accomplishment and never taking it for granted.ā€

News home page banner

Off

Thu, 24 Oct 2024 17:49:07 +0000 rahul.kalvapalle 310038 at ā€˜One of the great minds of the 21st centuryā€™: °µĶųTV celebrates Geoffrey Hintonā€™s Nobel PrizeĀ /news/one-great-minds-21st-century-u-t-celebrates-geoffrey-hinton-s-nobel-prize ā€˜One of the great minds of the 21st centuryā€™: °µĶųTV celebrates Geoffrey Hintonā€™s Nobel Prize

rahul.kalvapalle Thu, 10/17/2024 - 13:24

Cutline

University Professor Emeritus Geoffrey Hinton, who won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics, attends a celebration event held at the Schwartz Reisman Innovation Campus (photo by Mac Pattanasuttinont)

Rahul Kalvapalle

Topic

Our Community

Leah Cowen

Schwartz Reisman Innovation Campus

Wesley Hall

Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society

Artificial Intelligence

CIFAR

Department of Computer Science

Faculty of Applied Science & Follow your convictions. Think not just about how to advance technology, but how to direct its use for good.

These were among the key messages delivered by Geoffrey Hinton, University Professor Emeritus of computer science at the University of Toronto and winner of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics, during an Oct. 8 press conference held by the university to mark his historic award.

Widely regarded as ā€œthe godfather of AI,ā€ Hinton was named a co-winner of the prize ā€“ alongside John J. Hopfield of Princeton University ā€“ for his work on Boltzmann machines and artificial neural networks, which laid the groundwork for advancements in AI and stimulated new research directions in physics.

°µĶųTV President Meric Gertler hailed Hinton for having ā€œa profound impact on multiple fields and disciplines,ā€ crediting ā€œhis leadership and exemplary mentorship of young scholarsā€ with helping °µĶųTV become a global leader in AI and machine learning.

ā€œI think one cannot overstate the impact of a win like this on the ability of Canada, Toronto and the University of Toronto to be able to welcome talented newcomers, great students and wonderful faculty from across the country and around the world because of the recognition that arises with Geoffā€™s win,ā€ President Gertler said.

For his part, Hinton echoed his remarks from earlier in the day that he was ā€œflabbergastedā€ to receive the prize and pleased that the Nobel committee recognized the advancements in artificial neural networks.

He also answered questions about his influences, legacy and how it feels to go from being an obscure researcher who toiled in a largely forsaken field to a Nobel Laureate ā€“ and his advice for researchers who hope to one day follow in his footsteps.

Here are five key themes that emerged from Hinton's news conference:

His legacy

ā€œIā€™m hoping AI will lead to tremendous benefits, to tremendous increases in productivity and to a better life for everybody. Iā€™m convinced that it will do that in health care.

ā€œMy worry is that it may also lead to bad things, and in particular, when we get things more intelligent than ourselves, no one really knows whether weā€™re going to be able to control them.

ā€œWe donā€™t know how to avoid [catastrophic AI scenarios] at present. Thatā€™s why we urgently need more research. So Iā€™m advocating that our best young researchers, or many of them, should work on AI safety and governments should force large companies to provide the computational facilities they need to do that.ā€

A collaborative effort

ā€œI think of the prize as a recognition of a large community of people who worked on artificial neural networks for many years.

ā€œIā€™d particularly like to acknowledge my two main mentors: David Rumelhart, with whom I worked on the backpropagation algorithm ā€¦ and my colleague Terry Sejnowsky, who I worked with a lot in the 1980s on Boltzmann machines and who taught me a lot about the brain.

ā€œIā€™d also like to acknowledge my students. I was particularly fortunate to have many clever students, much cleverer than me, who actually made things work. Theyā€™ve gone on to do great things.

ā€œI should also acknowledge Yoshua Bengio and Yann LeCun who were close colleagues and very instrumental in developing this whole field.ā€

Canadaā€™s research strengths

ā€œI think the main thing about Canada as a place to do research is there isnā€™t as much money as there is in the U.S., but it uses its money quite wisely.

ā€œIn particular, the main funding council for this type of research, called NSERC, uses money for basic curiosity-driven research, and all of these advances in neural networks came out of basic curiosity-driven research ā€“ not out of throwing money at applied problems, but out of letting scientists follow their curiosity to try and understand things. And Canadaā€™s quite good at that.ā€

Many thought he was wasting his time

ā€œIt was a lot of fun doing the research, but it was slightly annoying that many people ā€“ in fact, most people in the field of AI ā€“ said that neural networks would never work.

"They were very confident these things were a waste of time and we would never be able to learn complicated things ā€“ for example, understanding natural language ā€“ using neural networks. And they were wrong."

Believe in your ideas

"My message is this: if you believe in something, donā€™t give up on it until you understand why that belief is wrong.

"Often, you believe in things and you eventually figure out why thatā€™s a wrong thing to believe in. But so long as you believe in something and you canā€™t see why thatā€™s wrong ā€“ like, ā€˜the brain has to work somehow so we have to figure out how it learns the connection strengths to make it workā€™ ā€“ keep working on it and donā€™t let people tell you itā€™s nonsense if you canā€™t see why itā€™s nonsense."

News home page banner

Off

Thu, 10 Oct 2024 16:26:59 +0000 rahul.kalvapalle 309828 at Geoffrey Hinton wins Nobel Prize in Physics /news/geoffrey-hinton-wins-nobel-prize Geoffrey Hinton wins Nobel Prize in Physics

davidlee1 Tue, 10/08/2024 - 15:35

Cutline

(Photo by Johnny Guatto/University of Toronto)

Rahul Kalvapalle

Topic

Global Lens

Artificial Intelligence

Computer Science

Faculty of Arts & Science

Geoffrey Hinton

Nobel Prize

Physics

Research & Innovation

Subheadline

A °µĶųTV University Professor Emeritus, Hinton shared the honour with Princeton University's John J. One of the first cohort of researchers supported by the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR), Hintonā€™s work helped catapult Canada to its current status as a global leader in AI development.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, which awards the Nobel Prize in Physics, noted Hinton persisted with his research even as the scientific community lost interest in artificial neural networks during the 1990s, and ultimately ā€œhelped start the new explosion of exciting resultsā€ in the 2000s.

Hinton, for his part, said during a °µĶųTV press conference Tuesday evening that his achievements wouldnā€™t have been possible without support for curiosity-based research ā€“ something he said Canada was good at.

He added that his shock at winning the Nobel stemmed from the fact that, while his work has drawn on statistical physics, he isnā€™t a physicist himself ā€“ and even ā€œdropped out of physics after my first year in university because I couldnā€™t do the complicated math.ā€

He also said that he plans to donate the money associated with the prize to various charities, including one that provides jobs for neurodiverse young adults.

Hinton likened the influence of AI to that of the Industrial Revolution during a virtual press conference with the academy earlier in the day ā€“ ā€œBut instead of exceeding people in physical strength, itā€™s going to exceed people in intellectual ability.ā€

He added that the rise of AI ā€œis going to be wonderful in many respects,ā€ citing health care and workplace productivity as two areas poised to benefit hugely from the technology. ā€œBut we also have to worry about a number of possible bad consequences, particularly the threat of these things getting out of control,ā€ Hinton said.

In early 2023, Hinton quit his job at Google and focused on sounding the alarm about the risks of rapid and unfettered AI development. He outlined his reasoning in a 46-minute °µĶųTV video last year, urging young researchers to focus their efforts on the emerging field of AI safety ā€“ a message he repeated in media interviews following his Nobel win.

He has continued to tackle the issue at lectures and public appearances around the world, including at °µĶųTV and at Cambridge University, his alma mater.

ā€œI am thrilled Geoffrey Hinton, an esteemed colleague and dear friend has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics,ā€ said Melanie Woodin, dean of °µĶųTVā€™s Faculty of Arts & Science.

ā€œGeoff is an historic visionary whose groundbreaking work in deep learning and neural networks has made °µĶųTV and the Toronto region a leading global centre for AI. Itā€™s just something that Iā€™ve always wanted to do.ā€

While taking the first steps towards her goal at °µĶųTV Mississauga was always her intention ā€“ her family lives near the campus and her older sister is already a student ā€“ Omar got an early and up-close look at university life via the Support, Engage, Experience °µĶųTV Mississauga (SEE UTM) initiative, which invites Peel District high school students to spend a semester at °µĶųTV Mississauga to get a taste of post-secondary education.

It was nothing short of ā€œa transformative experience,ā€ says Omar, who was encouraged to apply for the initiative by her vice-principal at Erindale Secondary School. ā€œIt wasnā€™t only a chance to connect with peers and mentors, but also an opportunity to engage in programs that helped me enrich my academic and personal growth.ā€

Now a first-year student, Omar is pursuing an honours bachelor of science degree in life sciences and eyeing a specialist in molecular biology.

She says her SEE UTM experience allowed her to explore the sciences from a variety of lenses. One of the highlights was taking a course, "STEM in Society," that explores how the STEM fields intersect with society, culture and politics.

ā€œIā€™ve always been interested in the sciences and STEM, so participating in a course that was more about the ethical side of ongoing situations in our world ā€“ and of science topics ā€“ really opened my eyes to different pathways that I want to explore,ā€ Omar says of the course taught by Sheliza Ibrahim, an assistant professor, teaching stream, in the Institute for the Study of University Pedagogy.

In addition to exploring new intellectual ground, Omar also got a taste of hands-on scientific research in the Applied Perception & Psychophysics Laboratory, co-directed by Assistant Professors Anna Kosovicheva and Benjamin Wolfe of the department of psychology. There, Omar used MATLAB programming software to design an experiment to study how visual and auditory stimuli interact. ā€œIt was to show how our perception of time can be influenced by how we interpret events,ā€ she says.

While Omar didnā€™t have time to test the experiment before her semester ended, she plans to do more lab work as an undergraduate student, picking up where she left off.

Alongside her SEE UTM experience, Omar also gained insight into °µĶųTV Mississauga's myriad resources and supports via the Black Access to Educational Excellence initiative (BAEE@UTM), which organizes events and networking opportunities aimed at helping Black high school students learn more about the campus community ā€“ and thrive once they get there.

For Omar, that means looking beyond her academic goals. She plans to get involved in student clubs, particularly anything that caters to her love of literature ā€“ she writes poems and fiction, and took part in the Caribbean & Black Writing Collective during her semester at the university. And she wants to start a non-profit tutoring organization by building on her high school experience founding the Erindale Secondary School chapter of Learn To Be, an NGO that provides free online tutoring.

ā€œIt was a great opportunity for students to not only gain volunteer hours but make connections with other students in an online tutoring format, where they tutored students from under-privileged families that wouldnā€™t be able to get extra help or access to educational resources outside of school,ā€ she says. ā€œIā€™d love to see it up and running at UTM if that would be a possibility.ā€

Omar remains in touch with some of her peers from the SEE UTM and BAEE@UTM programs, as well as the upper-year °µĶųTV Mississauga students who served as mentors.

ā€œI feel like we were all able to grow really close as a community,ā€ she says. ā€œIt helped me find my footing for what was to come when I enter university, so it was really amazing.ā€

News home page
